OT-Old Sears/ New Rice Building
Quote:The roughly 200,000-square-foot former Sears building at 4201 Main will be renovated into a startup incubator featuring co-working spaces, classrooms, meeting areas, offices for academic, medical and corporate partners, as well as as a cafe and other amenities.

The $100 million redevelopment, formally announced by university, city and business leaders Thursday morning, aims to cultivate and attract new technology companies and venture capital firms to a region known more for its established energy corporations and hospitals than disruptive startups and tech titans.

They'll have to pretty much gut the building. IIRC, under the dull façade is the original art-deco exterior of the building which is well worth preserving and restoring, which is why the building isn't being dynamited.

RE: OT-Old Sears/ New Rice Building
right now there are a bunch of lurkers hanging around the bldg and parking lot across the street.....pretty sketchy area.

maybe the construction crew will run them off; I wouldn't leave anything outside the fence.

I was downtown awhile back and was going to stop in to Sears on my way home. I took one look and kept right on going.

I got my first bed there. Also several pairs of cutoff jeans shorts, back when those were something you could buy.

Did Rice actually own the building already? It sounded like that on the news.

It was a long term lease to Sears like Rice village I believe. We bought them out early to use for the Houston Amazon bid.

Permit for construction on the Ion parking garage was issued this week. Wish we would get a nice one in West lot to free up some room and increase our parking capacity.
