I'm more impressed by postseason rankings.
LSU beat #2, #4, #6, #7, #8, #14, and #25 in postseason rankings.
The only team I can think of that's close to this is 1988 Notre Dame. They beat #2, #4, #5, and #7. Back then they only ranked 20 teams.
1971 #1 Nebraska beat the teams that finished #2, #3, and #4 in that season's final AP poll. They won every game by more than 20 points except their 35-31 win over final #2 Oklahoma, and the only other team that was even within 25 points was final #3 Colorado.
I am not sure LSU is the best team ever. Probably would have lost to a couple of Saban's Alabama teams for starters.
But they did have the best season ever, they accomplished the most.
Saw someone quoting a Sagarin rating of the last 20 champions (with no link). Had 2019 LSU at #4, behind Texas 2005, Miami 2001 and Clemson 2016.
I think you have to compare each season and not actual teams. The seasons are relative to each other based on where college football was at for that year.
1995 Nebraska was very powerful for that year, but let's face it, they would get mauled in today's game. Defenses now would shut down that option attack
Texas 2005 and Miami 2001? Hell, I think this year's Clemson and Alabama would smoke those teams, much less LSU
Nebraska 1971 was a different lifetime of college football
