LSU - Clemson stunning SOS statistic - quo vadis - 01-14-2020 12:38 AM

Someone just said LSU beat as many AP top 10 teams (at time game was played) this season as Clemson has the past 5 seasons, their 5 mega-CFP seasons. Each beat seven.

Clemson basically never plays a top 10 team until the playoffs.

That's why Swinney looked like a complete fool all season. Every knew how good Clemson was but the CFP couldn't rate them #1 since their schedule just is never that good. FSU's decline hasnt helped matters either.

They got lucky quite frankly the ratings weren't reversed where LSU 2 and Ohio St 1- because if they came out vs LSU the way they did vs Ohio St- would have been like 28-0 before they even knew what was coming.

RE: LSU - Clemson stunning SOS statistic - Statefan - 01-14-2020 01:17 AM

Clemson has played 13 teams ranked in the top 10 at the time of the game over the past 5 years and beaten 10 of them.

In 15 they beat 4, 6, and 8 and lost to 2
In 16 they beat 1, 2, and 3
In 17 they beat 7 and lost to 4
In 18 they beat 1 and 3
In 19 they beat 2 and lost to 1

If you go back 3 more years they beat 3 top 10 teams and lost to 3.

13-6 since 2012.

In fact they are 101-11 over the past 8 seasons with 4 of the 11 losses to that year's National Champion - FSU, Alabama, and LSU, but that does not make LSU's year any less impressive.

RE: LSU - Clemson stunning SOS statistic - bullet - 01-14-2020 01:45 PM

According to Sagarin, LSU was 8-0 vs. top 30 and 5-0 vs. top 10. Ohio St. (3-1, 2 over Wisconsin) and Auburn (2-3) were the only other teams to beat more than 1 Sagarin top 10.

Next best vs. top 30 after LSU? Ohio St., Oklahoma and Georgia had 5 wins vs. top 30, Baylor and Oregon 4 and Penn St., Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Auburn, Iowa, Texas and Memphis had 3.

RE: LSU - Clemson stunning SOS statistic - bullet - 01-14-2020 01:47 PM

10.Oklahoma

I'm more impressed by postseason rankings.

LSU beat #2, #4, #6, #7, #8, #14, and #25 in postseason rankings.

The only team I can think of that's close to this is 1988 Notre Dame. They beat #2, #4, #5, and #7. Back then they only ranked 20 teams.

RE: LSU - Clemson stunning SOS statistic - stever20 - 01-14-2020 03:46 PM

what is even more amazing with LSU is 4 of those top 8 teams- LSU played either on the road or neutral site. Only home game was vs Florida.

1971 #1 Nebraska beat the teams that finished #2, #3, and #4 in that season's final AP poll. They won every game by more than 20 points except their 35-31 win over final #2 Oklahoma, and the only other team that was even within 25 points was final #3 Colorado.

I am not sure LSU is the best team ever. Probably would have lost to a couple of Saban's Alabama teams for starters.

But they did have the best season ever, they accomplished the most.

RE: LSU - Clemson stunning SOS statistic - Stugray2 - 01-14-2020 06:01 PM

Burrow was definitely the most dominant college football player this year. Clear #1 draft pick, a weapon nobody could deal with.

It will be interesting to see if LSU can repeat or come close next year without him. Every year is different, but no question LSU was as dominant a champion as I have seen in quite awhile. Super impressive.

Saw someone quoting a Sagarin rating of the last 20 champions (with no link). Had 2019 LSU at #4, behind Texas 2005, Miami 2001 and Clemson 2016.

I think this LSU offense would have shredded the Bama defenses. I'm sure this is shocking to some people, but the Bama teams under Saban have always had a weakness against teams that could pass really well.

I'd also argue that LSU 2019 beat Alabama's best offense. IMO, Tua this year with the WRs he had has been the top Alabama offense. Certainly better than Coker, McCarron, or McElroy

Offense has evolved the last 10 years. Alabama and LSU used to be ground and pound until they updated their schemes

College football has flat out not seen an offense like this. The speed they move down the field and get plays off is unreal.

Think about it....LSU beat one of Alabama's best defenses (2011) with a very weak QB.

I think you have to compare each season and not actual teams. The seasons are relative to each other based on where college football was at for that year.

1995 Nebraska was very powerful for that year, but let's face it, they would get mauled in today's game. Defenses now would shut down that option attack

Texas 2005 and Miami 2001? Hell, I think this year's Clemson and Alabama would smoke those teams, much less LSU

Nebraska 1971 was a different lifetime of college football

I think it will be hard to replicate what LSU did this year.

Sagarin can be weird at the margins. For example, he has LSU barely ahead of Ohio State this year, 104.88 to 104.83. That makes little sense.

Sagarin has consistently and historically been biased against the SEC. So I'm not surprised at all.

Statistically Ohio State had a very good and strong team. Defensively they were loaded and probably had a better defense than LSU

LSU offense also seemed to kick it into a higher gear after Alabama. They were very good the first half of the season. The second half, they were unstoppable
