Our mascot is the Eagle. Our nickname has been the Mean Green since the 1960's. We officially adopted the Mean Green as our name in the early 2000's.

Of all the green objects to pick as a way to convey a mascot, why a bird? This is actually a serious question.

Our students selected the Eagle as our mascot back in 1922. Boston College selected the Eagle about 3 months earlier than we did. The Mean Green nickname was first reported in 1966, during a win against UTEP. It was given to our top 5 defense that featured Joe Greene, and Cedrick Hardman. Reporters gave the name to Joe Greene when he went to the NFL.
