To be honest I think that is only in certain parts of the country. In the Southeast, I doubt you find many people who care that much one way or the other.

As someone who lives in the Midwest, but has traveled all over the country, I agree. Midwesterners (particularly those loyal to Big State U.) hate Notre Dame. My BIL, an OSU fan, always says that his second favorite team behind the Buckeyes is whoever is playing Notre Dame that week.

In SEC (and also in the plains and out west) Notre Dame is just not as relevant on a day-to-day basis (with the exception for USC and Stanford fans).

Hate is directed at the folks you see every day. You don't hate someone several states over, hate comes from having a friend/relative/coworker who is an obnoxious fan. My own personal experience, I could see how people could hate Kansas basketball fans, but frankly they are irrelevant to me because I don't know any Kansas fans and my alma mater doesn't play them.

You hit the nail on the head.

If I'm at a bar talking to random fans in say Atlanta or Charlotte or wherever and we're talking college football it's inevitably going to end up being about SEC/ACC schools. If someone brings up Notre Dame you might hear something like "ohh, they got killed by Alabama or Clemson, I think they're overrated" but you'll be far more likely to hear rants about how "Tennessee sucks" or "Auburn paid Cam" or whatever else is the scandal of the day. Notre Dame, Southern Cal, or even an Ohio State or Michigan just isn't going to be on the radar like it is in other places.

Yea if you're in the Midwest you're stuck hearing about TSISB until you want to throw up. Other areas of the country, probably not so much.
