No doubt about that. It is an emotional sport. However, if you want to change and force the committee to look at you, you need to win. Mids do not get many opportunities, but collectively, they have to take advantage when they are there. Middling majors wont schedule strong Mid majors. NIT gives that chance, even if it is generally a road game. Keep winning and keeping showing up in MSG and the finals and it forces them to look more seriously at mid majors. It does not have to be the same team every year, but I have a hard time believing if the final four in the NIT was routinely mid majors instead of middling majors it would not help the cause for more inclusion.
