That’s not what he said. His idea was to create a G5 playoff to create an automatic qualifier to the FBS playoff because the current system will never allow a G5 into the playoff. You never allow facts to get in the way of your agenda.

I don't recall the part about the G5 playoff winner getting an AQ for the FBS playoff. I don't even see how that would work, as that would be a lot of games.

I got the impression it was just a separate G5 playoff.

I think it would be more like an NIT in basketball.

Which, if you think about it and "if" done the right way, might work.

But you would have to convince them to can the current system of bowl invites or make them open to non qualifiers other than NYD or potential big boy playoff. But I think that's where they would hope to succeed. While an 8 team playoff is nice to crown the NIT type champ you aren't going to have the rest turn down the crappy bowls and moreover these cities want the less of the lessers. You would do away with the conf championship and take divisions champs (would need to eliminate one conf likely) and seed them.

Won't happen but the notion can't be any more obscure than "sometimes" letting a G5 time play on NYD, never getting a shot at a title and many (usually MAC)playing their bowl games far from home in front of empty stadiums.

I don't know if I'm the only guy on the Pound who could give a rat's ass about the P5 playoff and watching Alabama vs. Clemson yet again (which I won't), but to me a G5 playoff would be outstanding. Taking Randy's comment one step further, done right I think it would stir up a lot of interest in the G5 conferences and teams among G5 fans who right now have no shot at watching their team in the P5 playoff system and are stuck with random, meaningless bowl games. Make it an 8-team playoff--champ of each conference plus three at large teams--and go for it. I don't care who they put in the other bowl games. Imagine a playoff with Boise, UAB, UCF, FAU, NIU, Memphis, Ohio, and Arkansas State. I'd tune in with great interest. Also, it really doesn't create another level--let's face it, there already are two levels in the FBS. And since they didn't know what to call the non-P5 schools they dubbed us the "Group of 5." How demeaning. I'm all in for a G5 playoff. Would be great!

You’re not alone. I think a G5 playoff could be fun and forward thinking. All the G5’s are really playing for is a fabricated co-national championship such as the one UCF was awarded last season(that no one really believes). That’s the absolute best case scenario. The only way NIU gets into a real P5 playoff is an expanded format of 16 teams. And here’s the problem with that.... teams such as NIU only have one miracle game in them. Theoretically they could beat any team given some amazing circumstances in any one game scenario. But in the expanded playoff they’d require, they’d need 4 miracle games in a row. Never gonna happen.

The entire crux of a G5 playoff would be based on viewership. So they’d have to make it more appealing than those lousy bowls. Here’s one way:

First, hold round one in only two locations. Say Lucas oil in Indy and any southern stadium. Make it as geographically accessible to the teams involved. Have 2 games Friday night and 2 games Saturday. There could be ticket scenarios that allow you to attend multiple games to boost attendance. Weekend long football party time.

Second, invite some P5s.(just wait. I know this isn’t a g5 playoff then) This idea came to me when a previous poster mentioned the NIT comparison. Why would P5s forgo a bowl for a G5 playoff? Probably the same reason college basketball teams who don’t make the big dance accept NIT bids. More games. More money. Not to mention there’s already a few P5/G5 bowl match ups and P5 teams will bring greater viewer numbers and attendance.

Third, you don’t call it a G5 playoff. It really is. But you don’t call it that. That label isn’t marketable. And the truth is, no one really cares who is the best G5 team. The only goal here is to make it marketable.

This scenario is about as likely as NIU making the current playoff format, I know. But there has to be some kind of playoff format that should give teams like NIU a real hope for real post season play. And maybe more importantly, hope for the fans.
