I understand that OSU will get some recruits just because of their name. However Alabama was not doing as well before Saban. If the coaching change results in one or two more recruits going to UC great.

Coaches matter a ton. Look at Urban's record. He's won at an insane level that OSU hasn't won at in decades. If not for coaching at the same time as Saban he'd be frequently discussed as an all time great. Many legendary coaches don't have 3 national titles and he's still only in his mid 50s. It's quite possible that Day keeps them a top 5 program but it's far from a certainty.

I agree. OSU has always had superior resources but wasn't winning consistently at this level until Urban arrived. Texas, the richest athletic program in America can't seem to buy a national championship. And Nebraska has a vault full of money but has remained pretty average of late.

So I don't think OSU falls very far, but I also don't think it's a given that this will be the seamless transition that some of its fans anticipate.

Does everyone here have short term memories? While I agree Urban was on a different level, and has OSU playing as an elite program matched by only 3 or so other teams... Jim Tressel went 106-22 in 10 years with Ohio State. He ushered in an era of success at OSU that they had not seen since the 60's/70's.

I would argue that Tressel had to play in a much tougher Big 10 than Urban did. OSU has been at the top of the mountain since 2002.

Agree with Banter here. I think 99% of the schools in America would take Tressel's .828 winning percentage a 10 year period, a national title and two BCS NCG'. I'm assuming they meant he was not as dominant as Meyer but I think that is a product of the two different coaching styles. Tressel's conservative play-calling often made the Buckeyes appear to be more vulnerable but fact be told it resulted in a lot of wins.
