Case in point: The WAC was one spot ahead of CUSA in the conference RPI. Now I'm no fan of the RPI as an end-all be-all for anything, but since those are the rules by which we're playing, then let's go:

The WAC had two teams with RPIs of better than 150: New Mexico State (35) and Utah Valley (83). Four teams had sub-200 RPIs, including Chicago State, for which closure is a ever-present threat.

CUSA had two teams with top-50 RPIs and four in the top 100. But because of all the stragglers in the bottom half of the league, it brings the conference RPI down.

So you're ODU, the No. 2 seed in either conference. Which projected path from last season would you rather take to get to the NCAAs? Louisiana Tech-Western Kentucky-Middle Tennessee or Cal State Bakersfield-Grand Canyon-New Mexico State?

And that goes for the CAA (no top 50 teams, three top-100 teams). They couldn't even get their second-best team into the NIT. The No. 2 seed's projected path was Delaware-Hofstra (which ended up losing to UNCW)-CofC. Is that harder than the CUSA path? I say no.

But because they had fewer awful teams, I'm supposed to accept as settled science that the WAC and CAA were superior to CUSA because their conference RPI was a tick better.

We also had the advantage of posting a gaudy record and finishing 2nd in the conference while only beating one decent team.
