In reality - it doesn't matter at all. The most popular programs are VT and UVA. It's kind of the same deal on the main board about arguing CUSA vs Sunbelt, when in reality both conferences are dirt compared to the P5. I mean, are we so insecure that we have to prove that we are more popular than JMU? That's kind of disappointing.
I don't think that is a fair read. ECU is a clear 3rd in Carolina, but they have a profile that is worthy of aspiring to.

JMU is #3 and it isn't even close. This is coming from someone who has lived in the 757, Charlottesville, and now Northern Virginia, and knows plenty of people from Richmond. As you can see by my username, I would also like to consider myself a semi-neutral observer.
Even if you want to go by sports fandom and not overall reputation, JMU has us (ODU) beat by a fairly wide margin. I know plenty of JMU grads and a fairly large portion follow the football team closely, while of the ODU grads I know, I think only one follows the team closely. Looking at the factors others are considering, they certainly have us crushed in terms of fanbase footprint. I know plenty of JMU fans in NoVa, while I haven't met a single ODU one.
Also, the attendance comparison is silly. Even if we have them slightly beat, that is due to our location and alumni proximity. As mentioned, there are plenty of people showing up to ODU games who are primarily UVa, Tech, or other fans. We have far more alumni/general football fans living in a close radius to draw from. It's a tough pill to swallow, but right now that is the truth.
It seems that those who are most adamant that JMU is #3 are all in NOVA. Maybe its just because ODU alums are smart and mostly stay here and avoid NOVA at all costs.
