What does length have to do with being two steps behind and being beaten down the floor?

The longer a players wingspan the easier it is to prevent someone from dribbling by you. Plus if you're smaller that your opponent you have to play closer to effectively challenge jumpers. Playing closer makes it easier to get beat off the dribble as well.

Oh, you're talking about transition defense. Sorry, misunderstood.
