In both cases, it's just a matter of the history, not the stadium itself. Probably how I feel about ND, too, and to some extent, Michigan and Ohio State.

The Rose Bowl is absolutely spectacular. It's not just the stadium alone - it's the surrounding mountains and setting. To me, it's to college football fans what visiting Wrigley Field and Fenway Park are to baseball fans. That one is a MUST.

As much as I hate to admit it, the Big House is extremely impressive, too. I would actually put it over Notre Dame in terms of the overall experience (albeit that's probably because Ann Arbor is an incredible college town compared to South Bend despite Notre Dame's beautiful campus). I haven't been to the Shoe.
Good analogy.

I've used a similar comparison: The Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden is for the Big East what the Rose Bowl is for the Big Ten and Pac-12. It's their pinnacle & identity.
