Congratulations to all three Tribe women!

It looks to me like Abby Rendle got shafted on the voting for two different awards. She was voted third team All-CAA but compare her numbers to the Second Team and especially to Elon's Center Malaya Johnson (funny that Elon had TWO Centers named to the Second Team). Abby has the same points per game and 1.7 MORE rebounds per game than Johnson, and led the CAA with 127 blocks. Abby's numbers are better than all the second teamers except for Mary Cuevas and, arguably, Ra'shika White. So what gives? It appears clear that the voting was definitely weighted towards the top teams in the league. Of the 6 Second Teamers, 5 are from the top three teams in the league. In fact, the Charleston and Towson girls on the Third Team could also claim to have better stats than some of the Second Teamers.

The All-CAA Second Team is comprised of Drexel senior Kelsi Lidge (11.5ppg, 6.4rpg) and sophomore Bailey Greenberg (11.3ppg, 5.0rpg), Elon’s White and senior center Malaya Johnson (11.8ppg, 6.0rpg), Towson senior forward Mary Cuevas (13.1ppg, 8.8rpg) and James Madison sophomore guard Lexie Barrier (11.3ppg, 4.3rpg).

The All-CAA Third Team features Northeastern senior guard Claudia Ortiz (11.3ppg, 4.3rpg), Charleston redshirt senior forward Tanisha Brown (12.0ppg, 8.2rpg), James Madison redshirt sophomore Kelly Koshuta (11.9ppg, 4.2rpg), Towson sophomore Nukiya Mayo (12.9ppg, 9.1rpg) and William & Mary senior center Abby Rendle (11.8ppg, 7.7rpg, 127 blocks).

The other award that Abby could have gotten was Defensive Player of the Year. Jada Graves of Elon got it and here is what the CAA says about her:

Graves led the CAA in steals, posting 70 takeaways for an average of 2.5 per game. She’s helped the Elon hold opponents to just 58.1 points per game this season. On the glass, she averages 4.4 caroms per contest. Offensively, she’s averaging 6.8 points while dishing out a total of 61 assists.

So, apparently, the voters favors steals more than blocks, although Abby dominated the CAA in blocks (as she has every year). Abby also averages 3.3 MORE rebounds per contest than does Graves. And, only since the CAA mentioned it themselves in their write-up, Abby's offensive numbers are considerably better. But the most egregious aspect of all is that Abby is a SENIOR who has dominated the CAA defensively for years whereas Graves is only a sophomore. Abby's body of work for four years, combined with her better or at least as good stats this year, earned her this accolade in her senior year. It's a travesty. Hopefully it will motivate her in the CAA tourney (especially since the Tribe plays Elon in the first game; Abby can show both Johnson and Graves who's boss). Go Abby!!
