The Stage I was never going to take us all the way to the moon.

But the Stage 1 unfortunately latched on to 2/5 of the supposed remainder and took it with it when Stage 1 jettisoned, and the act of jettisoning also destroyed another 2/5 of the rocket.

Not a successful Stage 1 given what it did to the rest of the rocket......
