RE: "Alabama's option is right up the road"
The big issues are first, he has never coached at the college level. He will need to include an assistant that has that experience, either a former head coach or long-time assistant coach.
Second, can he coach players? "Coaching" players in the NBA is not coaching/teaching players in college. He may be a good Xs and Os guy, but can he improve a player from freshman to senior? I know the head coach doesn't do it all on his own, this may rely on getting the right assistants, also.
Splash hire? Maybe. He's a name, but not a college name. He has no track record in college to back up being a good coach to play for. It will be interesting to see who and how he recruits versus who he ends up signing.
The talking heads only mention Pearl as the other program in state to beat. We all know that right now, Haase is on top in the state. The big question is can he stay on top? Pearl is good, but it's Auburn. Not a knock against Auburn, but Pearl has to fight the perception that is Auburn. Johnson is energetic, but unproven. Alabama has the football brand behind it and have other nationally recognized programs. If the machine puts money into it, there's no reason to think that basketball can't be good there. It will be an interesting to see how this all plays out over the next few years. I have faith in Haase and expect UAB to remain the best in state.
