Am I missing something?... Why not just give him a scholarship this year, we have spots left? I also wonder what other schools came calling.

Why? If he is willing to pay a year and then be on scholarship for 3 years, it's a win for ODU.

I have no inside infom, but is it possible that he may be getting financial assistance from the University with some program that fits his needs.
