Penn State sucks. Coming into this year, I had hopes that we would be able to take advantage. Like other have said, it doesn't look like we have improved much. I'll be rooting like hell nonetheless.

Dear wolverineeagle,
I was using your logic of history in comparing the rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State. You state because Eastern has a history of losing that it will continue. Using your historical understanding, one can then conclude as I said, that because Ohio State has beaten Michigan nine out of the last ten years, they (Ohio State) will win again, or if you prefer Michigan will lose again. I was not comparing Eastern to the sacred Big Ten. By the way, I think you meant that Eastern would have a disadvantage.

Do recall that the decade preceding this past one saw UM dominate OSU, 10-2-1. UM and OSU is a remarkably even rivalry in historical terms.

Dear wolverineeagle,
You can't have it both ways. If, you are going to argue that historically, this or that is going to continue, you can't then go back and give some other rationale to make your point. If, that is the case go back twenty years and Eastern had a winning football season. So what. Telling me something that happened years before that was different, just blows your argument in the first place. Wow.

What are you talking about? What other rationale? Historically UM-OSU has been an even rivalry. That is a fact. You do realize that historically means for the totality of a subjects existence do you not? You also realize that UM and Ohio State have been playing football for a lot longer than 10 years don’t you?

Regardless of one or two seasons EMU is historically a bad division one football program so that still supports my conclusion.

No non-Michigan message board talks about them more than we do. Not even MSU.

Can we please talk about EMU?

That’s fine with me, but every time I dare criticize EMU someone brings up UM. I’m here to talk EMU, not UM.

Anyone interested in UM should go over to their board and stay there. I, for one, have no interest them, their history, their future or whatever. Lets keep on subject and be positive with constructive critiques.

"Talk or bash?"

I don't remember any positive comments from Saturday night's game.

I 'talked' EMU FB in my latest post where I went over the units, players and game.

I need to add a paragraph on game plan, etc. (hint: EMU used a very vanilla game plan Saturday night. I presume on purpose).

If one wants to talk "EMU" one can talk about Benz, Hill, Jackson and Russell if one wants the 'rosy scenario".

If one wants 'gloom and doom'', one can talk the OL, etc. We have a few units which don't match up well with UT, BG, NIU, etc. (or PSU or Rutgers).

The game was like a 'Rorschach test' - if one wants to see good things they were there. If one wants to see bad things, they were also there...

If one watches an EMU game through UofM/B1G-filtered glasses, one will be disappointed.

You are utterly incapable of offering even the slightest bit of criticism for EMU which greatly hinders your ability to seriously discuss EMU football.

Anyways, a positive for EMU was the ability to impose their will on Howard when they had to. That was a good sign. Benz looked confident and Hill ran well. The offense appears to have the potential to be pretty good once they get some more experience un Parrish’s system. Unfortunately, these next two games won’t tell us much.

Defensively, EMU is as bad as it was last year and that is seriously disappointing. This has nothing to do with “looking through a Big Ten lens”. Bad football is bad football no matter the level and the defense looked slowed and poorly coached. Frankly, EMU looks no better than what it was under Genyk.

RE: PSU note
Can't disagree with any of that. I was very disappointed in the defense. We have given up soooo many big plays under English...it's hard to remember a game where there wasn't at least one. Some of the young guys, like Pat O'Connor, look encouraging. But simple things like taking proper angles and wrapping up tackles still elude us.

Penn State's offense is pretty terrible, so we might be able to hang around with them for a while like we did against State last year. I just don't trust the defense nearly enough to hold them down at the end. Unless we can put up 34 points again (very doubtful, against their defense), I don't see us really giving them a scare.

Dear EagleSam,
I guess I'm kind of by myself, except for NUPudge, but I think this is one of our best chances to beat a Big Ten team. Certainly we have to play at the top of our game, but our opponent didn't light the world on fire against Syracuse. Pennsylvania State may be better defensively than Eastern, but I think our offense is equal to theirs, and might even have an edge. I certainly don't see a blow out, like what happened to Central this past week end, and if that does happen, then we could be in for a long season

RE: PSU note
The PSU game notes have been issued by Sports Info.

Pudge Cotton will start at safety. Coleman is suspended for the 1st half because of a foul in the game (high hit on a defenseless player).

The release has the names of newcomers, redhsirts, etc who played their 1st EMU game Saturday night. (there were a lot).

This. I would love for EMU to get out of the toilet and beat a BIG10 team, but it won't happen unless it's IU or something.

Dear Ken Barna,
I'd like to know what facts or stats you are basing your claim that the Eastern Michigan Eagles have an offense that is "equal to theirs, and might have an edge" to the Pennsylvania State Nittany Lions' offense.

I think scheduling can be the difference between a 6 - 6 season and say 3 - 9.

Last season EMU had a bad schedule with 7 bowl teams + a good FCS team (and yes it took college FB fans here 12 months to learn that FCS teams can be good).

This year a little better but not too much. Howard over IL State helped.

Army appears to be still down.

UBuffalo seems to be headed in the right direction and will be tougher than folks think. (there were folks on the UB bandwagon BEFORE their game with OSU). LB Mack makes their defense 50% better than without him. He IS THAT GOOD!

I think CMU and WMU will both be down.

BG might be the best team in the MAC East and the ONLY MAC team with a shutdown defense.

Dear timxlydon,
Pennsylvania State's total offense was 353 yards. 278 in passing with two interceptions, and 75 yards rushing. Eastern had 210 yards passing with one interception, and Bronson Hill had 101 yards rushing himself.
Eastern has a much better offense than last year, and if, our defense improves, we will surprise some teams. Hopefully, this week against Pennsylvania State.

BTW, Ken, the PSU offense did nothing until Allan Robinson suited up for the 2nd half. He is a WR who is a real play maker. Hard to believe that a WR can make that much difference esp. since he isn't Calvin Johnson.

I'll be in Vegas this weekend, so I'm reading all of the comments on the game.

Unfortunately for me, the MAC schedule this weekend isn't really attractive.

But UofM/ND is on tap and WolvEgle should be able to help me decipher that one.

Last week college FB had great games all over the place with a lot of upsets.
