Utah Tech sounds more prestigious and does a better job at conveying where the university is and what it teaches than Dixie St does. It's an easy move. Get out of your own way with this one and don't overthink it.
Wokeness IS the reason it is being thought about.
It can still be pragmatic when the reason you first started thinking about it is stupid.
Having a place named "Dixie State" in ******* Utah is stupid. Changing the name away from that is smart.
Holy hell do some people get riled about about literally any change that happens ever. People just scream "WOKE" and "CANCEL CULTURE" about anything. They weren't forced to change their name, they're just going to do it because it'll result in more students, and therefore more money, coming their way. Woke has nothing to do with it. It's just people realizing their name is confusing and that they have a chance to make it much better. Were there any protests, social media drives, or anything about their name? I don't recall any, so it's hard to justify saying this is "woke"
I 100% support this name change. I usually oppose or grumble at these sorts of name changes. But woke schmoke, Utah Tech >>> Dixie State (Utah). Weber STate should be mad they didn't think of doing this. Now it's too late.
But it is definitely a "woke" move:
Quote:It follows recommendations by focus groups and community surveys that concluded it was time to remove the name, because its connotation with the Civil War Confederacy was hurting the school's image.
