I don't think it was a blatant lie, just a little something they whipped up and everyone ran with due to the lack of clarity. Either way someone should have known better and should have been very clear that it wasn't going to get used.

I agree.

I had clients in Cleveland in the 80's/90's and they were always a little edgy given the long drought up there. They would vent their frustration about the Reds' 1975 and '76 championships and the Bengals' two Super Bowl appearances the following decade, wondering why the Indians were hapless and the Browns were competitive but couldn't get over the hump.

It has been a terrible run for our pro sports teams for decades now and it's fair to say there is some hopelessness and a hunger for good news. The teaser message wasn't a big deal. But for fans of other schools to run with what appeared to be a bush league, cartoon-ish rendering on our historic field was annoying for a program aspiring to compete with the best.
