That's a situation where the other owners have given the commissioner that authority, and they can do *that* because all owners have their franchises via the league. The league, the NFL, has ultimate authority.

That's not the case with college conference commissioners. No conference can dictate to a university what it can and can't say. The universities create the conference, not vice-versa.

That depends on the bylaws written by the schools involved. But to go further, I'd be speculating based on even less information than we usually have on this board about documents (new AAC bylaws, Aresco's contract) I'll probably never see.

I agree with you about the speculative nature of this exchange. But let me ask you - whereas we all know about cases where commissioners of sports leagues have fined or otherwise publicly sanctioned owners of franchises, can you recall a single case where a commissioner of a conference has been able to fine or otherwise muzzle under the threat of fines and the like a member university?

Is fining school presidents for talking out-of-turn about the league's media contract negotiations really that different than fining coaches for talking out-of-turn about the league's game-day officials?

Not fining coaches, but i thought the issue here was the Memphis president or other high official was making the comments.

Conferences can fine athletic personnel - coaches, because the conference is an athletic entity. But academic officials? I don't think so.
