Who wants that job? It can be a career killer. They may just have to stay with Beatty...they tried throwing out big bucks and that didn’t work.

I'm sure there are plenty. Their issue is they went for a big name with Weis trying for a silver bullet and then hired a disaster named Beaty. Beaty was a surefire failure.. that was apparent when he was here.

Stepping back a bit to pull just the relevant posts, but I feel Beaty was hired because he was cheap and willing. They only finished paying off Weis at the end of 2016, two years into Beaty's tenure. Beaty had some familiarity with Lawrence and the program from his various assistant and coordinator stops there. There had to be some degree of personal preference in this job for Beaty because he makes about half of what any other XII coach makes ($1.6MM/yr vs next lowest Bill Snyder at $3.1MM/yr) and had an unenviable dumpster fire to take over and try to turn around. Nobody that might be considered qualified for a P5 HC role would be willing to take it for that price. Major Applewhite gets just as much at 10 wins in a season and better for every win beyond that plus possible academics bonuses.

I think Kansas approached the end of Weis's tenure looking for anybody cheap and willing to instill a positive culture in their football program, and a former Bailiff hire makes a lot of sense in that light. I imagine that Kansas administration looked at the period since paying Weis as a proper trial period for Beaty with a full slate of resources, especially coming into this fall finally with an FBS-reasonable level of scholarship players. Unfortunately for Beaty, he's still losing, and Kansas changed athletics director over the summer. Jeff Long probably isn't interested in retaining a losing coach that's so cheap to fire. The only reason Beaty might be retained is that his contract is a bit long, going through 2021, so it'd be $4.8MM over three years to fire him this December. I give him long odds to coach 2019, and none to coach 2020 unless he wins 7 of the next 23 games.

All I can say is, if they were going for cheap and useless, they could get that for under 100k. As much as the coaching fraternity likes to make it sound like what they do is rocket science... being a ****** caretaker isn't a hard task.

Kansas just made the same easily-defensible-yet-guaranteed-to-fail move that Rice has done so many times in the past. It was reactionary to a previous bad decision.. except when you flail after a bad decision, you typically make a worse one.

Its hilarious how obvious and embarrassing this is. 1.6 million a year for this clown show.

It feels like Kansas' basketball supporters want to make sure Kansas remains a basketball school, and not give and inch to any momentum the football program may create to take away any donations or support from basketball. Otherwise, it's hard to explain why they'd hire these coaches and stick with them after such poor performances.
