2020 MLB Thread
Pitchers and catchers have reported - it’s no longer the offseason!
Dodgers and Yankees are hyper-motivated and loaded with talent. Vegas loves these guys for the WS. Who are the dark horses?

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
I think the Reds are a big dark horse... I wouldn't be shocked at all to see them win the NL Central.
The AL Central IMO is gonna be a real fun division.... Well, all but the Tigers and Royals that is...

Indians in the AL, Mets in the NL.
Feel free to quote this back at the all star break and laugh at it.

Is that even a dark horse pick at this point?

Heh. You know what'll happen - Mets will be running away with the division at the ASB then collapse in the second half.

such a nice thought to know this weekend is last weekend with no baseball games until November.

Well, except that preseason games are just scrimmages for which they now charge regular season prices for a ticket...

Over/under one inning until an Astros player gets plunked (either in Spring Training or regular season)?

Not sure about Spring Training, but in the regular season I'll take the very first batter assuming the guy was on the 2017 squad...

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
I know I say this every year but it bears repeating: I love that baseball is back but I ******* hate Spring Training. Six weeks of holding my breath to see who gets hurt and how bad.
These guys are battling for the #5 starter spot but we're only at the first day of full squad workouts. Come on guys hold yourselves together!

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
Don't need six weeks of spring training. It's not 1920; the players aren't working odd jobs, drinking, smoking, and not training for the entire offseason.
Obviously they're not going to cut out half of spring training, because so much has been invested in it in Arizona and Florida. But it's not necessary.

Braves’ Markakis unloads on Astros: ‘Every single guy over there needs a beating’
there's a lot more in the link, but just to start:
Quote:I know as players we do not agree with what they did, we don’t stand behind them and never will we support them for their actions. I think they got off pretty easy. They’re going to be able to go out there and compete with no ramifications at all, which is wrong. I think the commissioner completely handled it the wrong way — but that’s the way he did it. And that’s the way we’ve got to live with it. But I know a lot of people disagree with him and the way he handled the situation he should be embarrassed with himself.
“What they did was [expletive]. They took a lot of opportunities away from people and possibly ruined people’s careers. Like I said, we’re all competitive. We want to compete and win. But when you take it to that level there is no excuse. Like I said, [expletive]. They should have some ramifications for what they did.”

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
what I find funny as hell was there was a 0.0% chance that there was ever going to be player suspensions. The union(which by labor law has to fight for the Astros) would have fought it tooth and nail and would have won.

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
As odd as it sounds, they should have banned the Astros from the postseason for a couple of years.
I don't know if that's allowed or not, but stripping the WS title wouldn't have accomplished much anyway. They can't give it to someone else if for no more reason then you can't be certain who would have won the thing in their absence. In fact, you don't even know who all the playoff teams would have been.
They also should have taken more draft picks.
Either way, the players involved needed to endure some sort of punishment.

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
Like stever I've been certain from the start there would be no player punishment. And when this first came out I said in the other thread that I expected a slap on the wrist because MLB wouldn't want to deal with this and would hope this whole thing could be soon forgotten. I was right about MLB but I'm thrilled (and surprised) at how vocal the players have become. It's fantastic how Manfred is getting slammed every time he opens his mouth.
I don't need players to be punished, and I don't want LA to be awarded a trophy. I want the WS to be vacated so Houston can no longer say they won it. On second thought, that's actually a pretty good player punishment.

It's interesting that day after day, we've got new players coming out and raking Manfred and the Astros players over the coals. It keeps the story alive in a way I would have never predicted.
In a way, I thought the players would more or less ignore it. My theory was that other teams had probably been doing the same thing and wouldn't want to draw attention...much like the steroid era. Maybe I was totally wrong.

I saw an ESPN piece saying that MLB and the players should come together and censure the Astros for cheating in the 2017 playoffs. Would be just like an asterisk.

saw that Oakland won't have local radio broadcasts this season..... Think this might be the start of a trend.

Radio isn't very profitable these days, if at all. The A's looked into buying a radio station a few years ago but decided that the cost of operating the station 24/7 year round was greater than the value of having a dedicated station for radio broadcasts.
How much is a radio station going to pay to air baseball games when all of those games are on TV as well? There's at least one MLB team (I think Padres) that purchases the radio air time for its broadcasts in exchange for keeping any advertising revenue themselves.

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
and the next pitcher out possibly- Severino from the Yanks-
could be bad news for Yanks with Paxton already out and German suspended first 2 months... Rotation is Cole, Happ, Tanaka, and ??? Probably Montgomery and Loasaiga.
good thing for Yanks is the schedule. Thru end of April- 7 with O's, 7 with Tigers, and 3 each with Toronto and Tampa. 12 tougher games- 3 ea with Oakland, Tampa, Cleveland, and Cincy.
