Cronin Contract Talks with UC
Great reporting from Justin Williams documenting UC's contract talks with Mick Cronin.
Needless to say the idea that UC wasn't fair to Cronin or that they were offering him a "functional pay cut" seems farfetched.
He would have made 3.3 million in 2020 (which is top 20 coach pay). UC raised his base to 2.5 million and significantly increased his incentive bonuses. They gave him favorable buyouts provisions going both ways.

RE: Cronin Contract Talks with UC
FINALLY, we can put the false rumors of Bohn mistreating Mick to rest... those rumors are now dead. In the tomb. Never coming back. Gone forever. Goodbye. It was all just a ruse created by the Cronin camp to get people to turn on Bohn and UC. If that doesn't convince you that we had to move on from Mick, I don't know what will. We had no other choice.

Agreed. Excellent article. Nice professionalism from Bohn. Mick, not so much.
Functional paycut?!!! Make it to the Sweet 16 and get another year guaranteed. Do it again, and get another. Poor Mick.
IMHO, Bohn is the best AD that UC ever had. The only feather missing is that P5 invite - which he thought he had.

Yeah, this pretty much absolves Bohn completely...the dude abided by every request of Cronin and his agent AND did what he could to inject the desires of the fans by adding lucrative incentives for advancing in the tournament (and pointedly mentioning it in communication).
Everyone with a brain and a non-Cronin surname will see this as Mick just wanting to leave, and the Decourcey drivel as a complete hit-piece to make MC seem clean in all this.

I always was a Mick supporter. I always thought I was objective about it, though.
However, that Iowa game was the last straw.
Getting outcoached... by Fran McCaffrey? Are you kidding?
At that point I was ready to bid coach Tyrion Lannister goodbye. After seeing this, I feel even better about it.
Thank you, UCLA.

Let's get ragpicker and skyblade in here to read this ASAP. Thank you, Justin Williams. Mick was leaving no matter what. There's no way he came out ahead making $4 million in LA compared to what he would have made here.

Waiting for DeCourcy's apology and retraction... He wasn't willing to put his source out there and belittled anyone on Twitter who questioned it or whether he bothered to reach out to UC. He sure got gamed by whomever it was.

I can't read the article, but I never cared how Cronin was treated, I am interested in the AD's decisions about who the coach should be. If Bohn couldn't keep Cronin for a reasonable amount, then so be it. I have heard otherwise, but I don't know. I have thought that it's a bad gamble for the program to take, but we ended up with Brannen, and he's a promising young coach with a good chance to succeed here. I'm also looking forward to a changed approach. If Cumberland comes back, there's still enough talent on this roster for Brannen to have a nice first year and set things up for longer-term success.

I even thought that compared to the 2.2 mill he was making here.
The leak to DeCoursey was spin. It sounded like it when it happened and shame on DeCoursey for biting. I really like him and his writing and he has always been fair to UC and Mick. However, once the article came out, it was obvious which side the "source close to the athletic department" was on. It was also obvious that Mick was gone. Based on the Athletic article, I know also that the AD was more than willing to comply with the public information request.

Brutal look for Cronin. I'm not surprised at all though. Now hopefully all his shills will STFU about him and stop running off good posters from this forum.

I think in all of this it really exposes something about Mick and that is he really wasn’t very likable. And I think that was directly seen in his inability to recruit. Recruiting is salesmanship and good salesman are likable and good talkers and Mick was none of that and I think that’s why he couldn’t get the kids he wanted and that forced his hand into getting projects and playing defensive basketball. I think he was his own worst enemy in that area.

How often do we forget the time when Cronin almost jilted us and ran off with UNLV. Scoffing at a performance laden contact is laughable.

He should have taken media training (and he really should now that he's in LA). He turned fans off with his defensiveness, and once you lose someone it's impossible to get the benefit of the doubt back. It was a self-inflicted wound that never healed. I think positing it as a cause for his recruiting problems is probably a bridge too far though.

That’s a fair assessment, but I think his self doubt was so high that it ultimately crept into his approach on who to recruit. He was disliked by so many because he put up this front that required his ego to be constantly stroked. Inside he was his biggest critic and I think that’s what made him so d a m n bitter.

If you look at the tweet from the Athletic, Keeneland Dan (Mick's brother) actually replies and congratulates Justin Williams for getting the story right finally.
