Some realistic numbers to get an idea of how huge the hill is for CSUSM. Even before you get into the CSU Trustee politics and the student fee vote (at a Cal State mind you). Their enrollment is half what it needs to be, their budget less than half. Their endowment is a mere $24.1 M, Long Beach is $66.8 M, Fullerton $61M, Northridge $184.7 M (SJSU is $150 M, Fresno State $154 M, SDSU $290 M). There is a lot of institutional build up required before the CSU trustees would allow them to consider it.
There is also the issue that they just moved up to D-II 2 years ago and they have 6 more years to go before they can consider D-I
