Athletics celebrating 20th anniversary as CSUSM readies for new challenges
https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/spo...story.html

CSUSM = Cal State University San Marcos (CA) (San Diego area)

Pugh (former CSUSM baseball coach) can see Cal State San Marcos taking the same path as UC San Diego and eventually becoming an NCAA Division I program.

Perhaps another potential member for the Big West or the WAC...

Somewhere way down the line...way down the line...
Quote:Haynes firmly said she never sees a day where the Cougars will play football.

That wording sounded wrong. Could football be possible in the future? It is very strange, but it sounded like she left things in the open for football, but she could be gone in a few years. We do need more schools in California to add football.

Football is not possible in the future for CSUSM...wrong sounding wording or not...

San Diego State University already has DI football (FBS)...
University of San Diego already has DI football (FCS)...
San Diego does not need another DI football university...

UC San Diego is going DI non-football (BWC)...
CSU San Marcos could go DI but non-football...

I'd add a few more "way"s to that.

They just built a new gym. A nice one:

[Image: TheSportsCenter1.jpg?width=500&h...;mode=crop]

But it's not D1 sized, even with the possible expansion. So they'd have to scrap their new gym to build a proper arena, and I don't see that happening. Not for a few decades at least. There are way better D1 candidates in the CCAA than San Marcos.

They say they just need money to do that. Well, that's the case with any CSU athletics program.

The comment about getting better athletes is a joke. Saia and the other coaches got some great athletes back in the NAIA, and this year they barely got past former conference mate San Diego Christian, a perennial cellar dweller and currently 7-14. When Saia was coach, he'd have wiped the floor with them.

I admit that I knew nothing about Cal State San Marcos, their culture, their fanbase, or athletic funding before reviewing the article.

She clearly says no to Football in the article

However, if they were looking to start football at all, D2 in California would be non starter. Reviewing the Map

There are not many D2 football schools out west. Take that a step further, Dixie is moving to the WAC and Humboldt has elected to drop football. That leaves Azusa as the only D2 school for 600 miles.

If a new AD came in and decided football was a must, FCS would have a better chance of success. There are in state games with University of San Diego, Cal Poly, Sac State and UC-Davis. The roadtrips Northern Arizona and Dixie are also fairly close.

in addition to the common core math used to estimate CSUSM earliest potential D1 upgrade...

CSUSM also would have to double the size & capacity (2800) of the Sports Center (1400) in order to be on par with CSU Northridge (BWC) Matadome (2400)...

CSUSM would have to triple the size & capacity (4200) of the Sports Center (1400) in order to be on par with UC San Diego (BWC) RIMAC Arena (4200)...

not including the other upgrades needed to move up to D1...

so yeah we're talking about a lot of ways to go...
Cal State San Marcos started as a branch campus of SDSU (the Mountain West school). It became independent in 1990.

I think it was started for nefarious reasons. The Cal State system requires each college to admit any student who graduates in the top 1/3 of their high school within the college's geographic district. That's a really low bar for the best CSU schools (SDSU and Cal Poly). Southern CA high schools are comparable to high schools in rural Mississippi/Appalachia, so finishing top 1/3 in most local high schools does NOT mean you're ready for college. They'd rather save their spots for students who pay out-of-state tuiition. So SDSU started San Marcos with the intention of eventually cutting the size of their district in half.

Today, CSU-SM is a small commuter school (13,000 students). There's little campus life. It's mostly composed of students who didn't have the SAT scores to get into SDSU, and whose high schools were out-of-district for SDSU.

FCS is a pipe dream for them. It's a glorified community college. It makes SIU-Edwardsville look elite. It's like NKU 30 years ago before they ended open enrollment.

Even D-1 basketball is a huge stretch, especially because it's in a region that doesn't support its sports teams.
This is the word of a former baseball coach. This is hardly indicative of a long term vision of DI.
Long term, maybe, but nothing to get riled up about right now.

The old coach said "taking the same path as UC San Diego" -- UC San Diego is about 35 years older than Cal State San Marcos, and UC San Diego's first full year of Division I athletics will be 2024-25. So maybe expect San Marcos to be in D-I by 2059. 07-coffee3
Chico State
Sonoma State
CSU-L.A.
CSU-East Bay
Azusa Pacific
Cal. Poly-pomona
CSU-Dominguez Hills
CSU-San Bernardino
These are better candidates before CSU-San Marcos.

An FCS Big West could get started.
UC-Davis
Cal. Poly
Azusa Pacific football only
Dixie State football only

Long Beach State
Fullerton State
Northridge State
Those 3 talked about football.

UC-Irvine, UC-San Diego and East Bay State are open football in the future. 2 of the 3 had football before. That is 10 schools.
Plus you also have CSU-D. H. do have a field that could host football that is on campus which they would be sharing with a pro-soccer team.
Some realistic numbers to get an idea of how huge the hill is for CSUSM. Even before you get into the CSU Trustee politics and the student fee vote (at a Cal State mind you). Their enrollment is half what it needs to be, their budget less than half. Their endowment is a mere $24.1 M, Long Beach is $66.8 M, Fullerton $61M, Northridge $184.7 M (SJSU is $150 M, Fresno State $154 M, SDSU $290 M). There is a lot of institutional build up required before the CSU trustees would allow them to consider it.

There is also the issue that they just moved up to D-II 2 years ago and they have 6 more years to go before they can consider D-I

As I said above, 35-40 years from now is more like it, if they ever want to do it.

But, if you're going to compare San Marcos statistics to Cal State campuses with D-I athletics, take a look at San Marcos vs. Bakersfield, who has been in D-I for several years and will soon be joining the Big West:

San Marcos enrollment: about 13,100
Bakersfield enrollment: about 9,300

San Marcos endowment: $24.1 million
Bakersfield endowment: $23.9 million

San Marcos annual university budget: about $90 million
Bakersfield annual university budget: about $75 million

Again, I'm certainly not suggesting that San Marcos should launch D-I athletics any time soon.
CSU Bakersfield has one advantage - it is the only 4-year university in a county of 840,000 people.

Although Bakersfield is the most uneducated mid-sized city in the USA. Of the top-100 US metros, it finishes dead last in % of adults with a college degree (14.7%).

He has zero facts or sources. It’s all in his little fantasy world.
I still mourn the loss of San Diego's other DI team, the USIU Gulls
David could cite sources and most of you would still doubt him. He still seems to be more into bc this than the rest of us.
Personally I like the creative side of people on here. Never say never
What we really need is for 150-200 D-I schools to drop down to D-II and/or drop football altogether. If we continue the trend of the NCAA allowing more and more schools to leach off the major schools, eventually they will pull out and leave every one of those wannabes holding a not so sweet smelling bag. And they will pull down some legitimate D-I programs along with them. Enough is enough.
