RE: Ottawa vs UC Game Thread
Biggest positives for me:
Logan Johnson didn't look spectacular, but he was confident enough to attack the basket, play good defense, and look like he fits in the rotation. If he can give us Trevor Moore type of minutes this year we should chalk that up as a win.
Keith Williams looked like the player we were told he'd be coming in. His shot was smooth, he worked to get open, and he actually played like a 6'5" guard.
Tre Scott seems to be taking on a leadership role. He got the start and was active throughout the day.
Trevor Moore knocked down a few nice shots. He looked good.
Ellie looked ready to play serious minutes.
The bad:
Cane and Jenifer didn't really do much. Which is concerning, because the PG play was often a dissapearing act at key points last season.
Brooks didn't play well.
Not worried about Cumberland, but man, he was launching some bricks from deep today. That being said, he played a little bit of point and had a few nice passes.

Better? Most people think they league is way down. Wichita lost their entire team. Houston lost some key parts. Only UCF should be way up but comes down to health. UConn and Memphis should be better but are a year away. Tulsa, SMU, and Temple are decent.
Yeah, UCF and UConn were really the only teams that lost fewer key parts than UC. I don't think the league is way down, I'd say it is slightly down though.
I'm expecting the UC, UCF and Houston to be the clear top 3 in the conference. Some other teams should improve, but probably not to the point they will compete for the conference title this year. Wichita State will be at or near the bottom of the league.
Might be better in spots 4 through 9 but the league just had two teams seeded in the top four last year and another top 25 team in Houston. The league is closer to being a two bid league than placing two teams in the top 25.
Kyle Washington would be the this teams best post option by far.
I doubt we will have a top 5 in the league, but I think we will have 2 or 3 teams in the top 25 pretty comfortably. I'd say minimum of 3 bids, max of 5.
We can agree to disagree on Washington, I was not a big fan of his. He would be the best post scoring option. But at everything else (defense, rebounding, passing, movement) Eliel already matches or exceeds him, exceeds him by quite a lot in a few areas. I'd gladly take Eliel over Washington, especially when you consider potential development.

Agreed on our point guards. I'm more worried about that position than the 5. I'm hoping Logan Johnson at least pushes the seniors for playing time. Even if Brooks and Diarra only give us 10-15 minutes each, we should still be set depth wise up front with Eli, Tre, and Fredericks taking most of the minutes at the 4 and 5. Fredericks looks like a guy who can play inside and out, so I would like to see us go small often with him at the 4.

If Diarra or Hardnett can give some quality minutes, I wouldn't be surprised to see Cumberland playing a fair amount of point - he was already when Broome was in the game. Williams and Fredericks looked like they belong on the court. A lineup of Cumberland-Williams-Fredericks-Scott-Nsoseme would be able to switch everything on defense and be tough to guard on offense. But there would be depth issues at the 4 and possibly the 3 and 5 if we used that lineup regularly, unless Diarra/Hardnett can give at least 10-15 quality minutes.

Wasn't able to watch the game today. My main concern about the PG position is that Mick will feel obligated to give JJ and Cane heavy minutes. We may be better off running Cumberland at the PG position, with Keith and Fredericks on the wing. Logan may pass both the seniors by the end of the year, but will Mick pass him over the two seniors is the question?

My guess is Hardnett is a red shirt this year. I can't see hik playing significant enough minutes to justify not RS.

Mick said he was glad to see deflections go up as the game progressed. Sorry. Not sorry?

RE: Ottawa vs UC Game Thread
I was not able to see any of the game but I'm always glad for a win and encouraged by comments about returning players and newcomers.
My question would be, how evaluative is a game such as this? Isn't Ottawa comparable to a low major team we'd typically see on the home schedule in November or December? If so, we've seen UC routinely crush those teams and the bench players shine, only to struggle against better foes.
But I do give Mick credit for scheduling this trip at this time. Ten extra practices with a new rotation of players should pay dividends when the season arrives. And this season's opener will likely be the most heralded game in a long time. So here's hoping these 'Cats are ready to open 5th/3rd with a statement win.

Evans, Clark, Washington were our 3 best shooters. Meaning when a shot left their hands, you expected it to be successful most out of all players on last year's team.
That would suggest that the 4th best shooter from last season is now this team's best shooter. That is a scary prospect considering how Cronin team traditionally struggle to score. Get ready for some rock fights baby! We were really spoiled last year during the regular season.
Right now I'd say Trevor Moore (the guy who was better known as a football player in high school) is this team's only knock-down outside shooter. Yikes. Better get used to crashing those boards.

The more I think about this team and his own personality, I'm happy that Jaquon Parker is on staff to mentor Trevor Moore, because those guys look to be pretty damn similar in a lot of ways.

With the same number of attempts, Moore shot worse from 3 last year than Broome or Jenifer. He also shot worse than Cumberland even though Cumberland shot twice as many 3s.
So you aren't basing your analysis on actual stats, which is fine, because guys progress from year to year, and Moore was just a freshman, and he was billed as a shooter, and his shot looks good, and so forth. But then it's weird that you think it'll be a bunch of rock fights because our fourth best shooter from last year will be this team's best.
This team will be different from last year's, but I don't expect that they'll be back to the slow-it-down, grind-it-out, try-to-win-60-to-59 teams of the Big East just because they lost Evans and the seniors.

Finishing up his degree this summer and will be moving on to pursue coaching opportunities when they return from Canada. Helped out this summer while he was still around...
