If we can judge from this game.

Fredericks will be backing up Scott at the 4. Eliel will be starting over Brooks and Keith Williams will be our most improved player.

Diarra and Hardnett haven't played, wonder what's going on there.

Between Fredericks and (especially) Williams, I'm very enthusiastic with the 3 spot going forward.

That's too be expected. My hope is they can get it together by mid-season.

The lack of 3 point shooting is concerning though. It's going to be hard to execute much when teams can pack it in and ask if we can make threes. Especially since, so far it looks like the answer to that question is no.

We just ran an inbound play to get Keith open for an elbow jumper. And he nailed it. Did not see that coming.

Somebody taught Keith Williams to shoot over the summer. Why can't we do that for all our players?

Chad mentioned a few times that Keith was a far better shooter last year than he showed in games. He looks a lot more confident overall today, and it appears to be translating to his jump shot.

I wonder how much Cronin's hands hurt by the end of the game from all that clapping...

Hardnett finally comes in the game.

Sounds like Tre is going to be the defensive floor general for this team. Heard Cronin several times tell Tre to "talk to him" or "tell him what he did wrong" when somebody else messes up on defense.

We're gonna hear a lot of Tre Scott-Justin Jackson comparisons this year

That's unfortunate. Guessing we won't see him on the Canada trip then.

85-57 was the final score.

I think Tre can be every bit as good of a defender as Gary Clark.

The key to the season is going to find a way to win without playing either of the true centers. The hardest player to replace is going to Kyle Washington. They have enough guys that can do what Gary and Jacob did for them but nobody on the roster that can score from the five spot.

When Cane and Jarron are on this is going to look like a top 10 team but if they go cold the Cats are going to have grind out a lot of games. Kieth Williams looks like he should be getting starter minutes on the wing.

RE: Ottawa vs UC Game Thread
I know it was just an exhibition, but there were a lot of good signs.

The combination of Scott and Eliel looks ready to cause havoc on the defensive end with their ability to switch everything and guard any position.

Scott, Eliel and Fredericks are going to detroy some teams on the offensive glass.

Williams and Moore both seem to be much better shooters, Williams looks good enough that he may be starting over Fredericks.

Broome seems to have improved his defense.

Logan Johnson looks ready to get some minutes.

The bad.

Cumberland still missing a lot on threes.

Lots of missed FT's.

The defense had quite a few breakdowns.

Offense needs work. Eliel and Scott move well and Scott passes very well. But they need to get better at finishing. Especially Eliel passed up on shots quite a few times and seemed to be 50-50 when he did shoot it.

Brooks did not play well. Cronin pulled him quickly every time he did get in the game (mostly because Nsoseme was getting tired) and eventually went small with Scott at the 5 to give Eliel a rest.

Plus we have to remember, the AAC is going to be substantially better than it was last year. We kinda caught a break as Memphis and SMU had ( for their pedigree ) bad seasons. It was nice to see them out there again, though.

Better? Most people think they league is way down. Wichita lost their entire team. Houston lost some key parts. Only UCF should be way up but comes down to health. UConn and Memphis should be better but are a year away. Tulsa, SMU, and Temple are decent.

I still disagree on Kyle Washington. If Washington was on this team I think Eliel starts over him. Washington could score yes, but he hurt the team with his unwillingness to pass the ball, lack of mobility and poor defense. Eliel looks like he has NBA potential, there will be growing pains but long term he is a better player and short term he is as good, just at different things.

The biggest issue I see are the backup bigs. Hardnett didn't get many minutes, which indicates he isn't ready. Brooks couldn't stay on the floor for more then 2 minutes without getting pulled for making a mistake and as a junior he should have figured it out by now. With the way Cronin was subbing, Scott and Eliel are going to be getting a lot of minutes and wearing down. Hopefully Diarra is ready to play at least 10-15 minutes per game, otherwise the lack of depth is going to be a problem.

Yeah, UCF and UConn were really the only teams that lost fewer key parts than UC. I don't think the league is way down, I'd say it is slightly down though.

I'm expecting the UC, UCF and Houston to be the clear top 3 in the conference. Some other teams should improve, but probably not to the point they will compete for the conference title this year. Wichita State will be at or near the bottom of the league.

Might be better in spots 4 through 9 but the league just had two teams seeded in the top four last year and another top 25 team in Houston. The league is closer to being a two bid league than placing two teams in the top 25.

Kyle Washington would be the this teams best post option by far.
