We were in the SBC at the time, however this year is the 10 year anniversary of WKU's last Sweet 16 run. Ty Rogers hit a buzzer beating 3 pointer for the win over 5 seed Drake. I was at the game in Tampa and never will forget it.
I was actually driving through Bowling Green when he made the shot. We almost ran off the road. We were headed to the Cayats for WNIT.

Clearly this league deserves more respect from the committee.
They are just doing their part to help make up for the lack of revenue from the tv contract. Keep those NCAA basketball credits coming
I think I've seen that its around 250K for the conference per win. Anyone know if thats right?
I think that's pretty close but that's per year per credit for like 6 years maybe? So next year we'll get 1 million (4 X 250K)
The value of a "unit" this year is right around $280,000 per year for 6 years. So Marshall, just by playing in the game today, generated about $1,700,000 for the conference as would have any team that got out auto bid. By winning the conference will now benefit from having two units, or about $560,000 per year for the next six years. If we can beat wvu that number goes to $840,000 per year.
To put it in perspective as to why multiple bids are so important and having those teams advance is so lucrative, the ACC pulls about $24,000,000 a year in tournament money based on their collective units. That's why at large bids are hard to come by. If Middle would have gotten in like they should have instead of Oklahoma it would have taken at least $1.7MM out of the Big 12 pocket and put it in CUSA.
Exactly. The tournament credit gets evenly split among the 14 schools so each one is worth about $121k per school over a 6 year period. So Marshall got us all an extra $20k/yr for the next 6 years today.

Which is great, but $20k is really nothing in the grand scheme of things. We need 2 or 3 teams in.

Which is another reason this conference needs to cut the anchors that are keeping this conference from being a 2-3 bid league.

So the team that earns the money gets equal what the others get? Seems only right they should get an extra share or a few grand more.

I don't think it is a straight even split. Most conferences do it so the competing school gets at least 50% and the remaining 50% is split between the other members.
The A10 incentivized schools to schedule at large worthy schedules by making that split 70/30 so schools that invested in basketball reaped the rewards more than the schools with poor performance.

Truth. Making the Sweet 16 is how a school or a conference's improves its' basketball reputation. If you're making the Sweet 16 most years, it's almost impossible for them to leave you as a one-bid conference.
CUSA doesn't get any respect as far as seeding or multiple bids because the bottom half of this league is a joke. The top 6 or 7 teams are always solid.
A lot of us on this site have been saying for years:
MORE emphasis on basketball improvement = MORE INCOME$$$
This has been met with resistance, apathy, and claims of poverty by some schools. It has been a struggle to get fourteen schools to agree and act together.I hope it changes very soon--we need the income just to offset losses in other areas. We need OOC wins of any kind and better scheduling and investment by everyone.

Agreed. Unfortunately some of the schools have not and will not for multiple reasons be investing in basketball. I do think some of the more traditional teams will make improvements with the new hires as ADs, and Head Coaching Changes.
Charlotte and UTEP in particular for basketball. If everyone else could maintain and those two get up to the Top 100 RPI like they are capable of then we could become a 2 bid league.
I love the direction UTSA is headed and I'm glad to see us put together a good run. Hopefully we can make the Sweet 16. I think we are close to getting 2 bids. We just need to get over that hump and then take advantage when we do.

I agree that's how it should be, but I'm fairly certain I've seen in the past that the school actually in the tournament gets an equal cut as everyone else. The only extra they get is travel expenses paid for.

I agree. I think basketball is the quickest way to see a return on investment too. It can take a few seasons to turn a bad football program around. But, with basketball, a smart hire and wise investments in facilities, scheduling, and marketing can result in a winning culture and new revenue in just one season. C-USA is an undervalued basketball conference, and not far from being a really solid multi-bid conference. I wish more of the leadership within C-USA would recognize it.
