RE: City trying to Sell Lamberts Point GC for water treatment plant
The problem is VCU's campus is downtown and that is where cities focus. We call ourselves an "urban campus", but in reality it is a suburban campus. It is not an area where people come into town and ever see or even accidentally pass through. Crime in Park Place and Lamberts Point only need to be contained, which the railroad tracks seem to be doing a good job of doing, and eyesores have little effect to motivate the city into making it a priority.. Revitalizing the area is not going to be a top priority. VCU, however, is in the most visible part of Richmond. Richmond is an improving city and VCU a part of it and is benefitting from it as well. Norfolk is not improving. Downtown and Ghent have gotten a lot better over the last 20 years, but that isn't where ODU is. The rest of the city has been in decline since at least the 70s.

RE: City trying to Sell Lamberts Point GC for water treatment plant
Here is what Theresa Whibley (city council member, rep for Ward 2) had to say about the sale of Lambert's Point;
Quote:This project is to help the water table of Tidewater by injecting clean, reclaimed waste water into ground which will stem our subsistence and clean the Elizabeth River. It is a pilot program which will be studied until 2023.
The City is paid 15 million for the right to study this project, meanwhile the golf course will be open. If project is successful, city will receive second 15 million, (total 30 million) and course will be closed, but city will retain access to easement around water to allow for kayaking, etc and the potential extension of Elizabeth River Trail. Land at practice area and pro shop is also maintained by City. City was to incur great upcoming expenses for this area, as it is sloughing into river.
I was not in favor of losing green space and a golf course initially, but now that Sewell's Point course is now open to Norfolk residents and we will maintain water access, I supported this.

Also, I assume when she says "reclaimed waste water into ground which will stem our subsistence", she meant to say subsidence.

So if this is an effort to make the Elizabeth River nicer and make the city better, perhaps we are the ones being selfish about this

I thought I remembered the whole point of putting a golf course there to begin with was because no significant structure could be built there. They supposedly couldn't disturb the soil because it was already contaminated by the plant that used to be there. So the golf course was done because they didnt have to dig very deep to build it. It was one of the few things that could actually be put on that property.

True but its very close. One could walk to Ghent from ODU if it were safe. If LRT ever goes down Hampton Blvd it will connect the campus to downtown. And most importantly, if ODU and EVMS ever merge, the heart of Ghent will be the bridge between the two campuses. I could envision a time where ODU banners are hung on light poles down Colley, and ODU themed jerseys and photos in restaurants etc. It could truly become at least a quasi-college centric area with students from both campuses meeting in the middle to drink, eat and socialize. Basically Norfolk's version of "the Fan". All it takes is vision, desire and support from the state, city and campuses.

I would love for all of that to happen

Looks like it's official pending state approval. $15 million up front and $15 million in 2023 when HRSD is expected to take control of the property. Golf course will remain open until then. City maintains ownership of driving range property but doesn't mention the clubhouse. Would've been great if ODU could've stepped in and bought it.

This absolutely should be the vision. It would be transformational.
