City trying to Sell Lamberts Point GC for water treatment plant

We need to stop this if we can. I think having the golf course near ODU really helps.

Replacing it with a water treatment plant doesnt help ODU at all.

Is there enough room for a football stadium?

Pretty sure it’s an old landfill. No stadium will but going on that, or a water treatment plant for that matter. They would have to excavate the old waste. Which would be very expensive. Dumb move by the city

They could create the base using dredging materials like Maersk did at Craney Island to build that huge marine terminal off 164 and literally right across the river. They have never had any problems there. Yes, it could be done.

ODU always talks about the lack of green space on campus. Well, that's a lot of green space up for the taking.

That would be a shame. The golf course really helps make campus look nicer, provides a place for the golf team to practice and provides a nice amenity for the community. Some of the best views in Norfolk are from that course. And even if it was a good idea to sell the property, why not sell it to ODU since the land is connected to campus and ODU needs all the land it can get.

I never realized the city owns the golf course, not ODU

Our campus would smell awful if they built a water treatment plant there. If anyone is going to buy this land, it should be ODU.

This land should and could be used for more dorm space and space for recreation and Athletic purposes. Norfolk screws ODU every step of the way. Richmond is committed to VCU and you can see the results and economic impact.

There is already a wastewater treatment plant right there. No odor. But still ODU needs to buy this land

Not only Richmond, but the state as well. My guess is because the legislators actually have to go there once a year. It really is sad though. And Kenny is an alumnus too.

The city of Norfolk was a key partner in ODU's expansion. Without the cities help the school would probably still have the same foot print from the 90's.

This. Richmond city government supports VCU far more than Norfolk supports ODU.

Norfolk doesn't screw ODU every step of the way. I give you The Village and the start of football as prime examples. Could Norfolk do more to help ODU? Yes, but to say Norfolk "screws ODU ever step of the way" is patently false. Now if you were to change Norfolk to Virginia General Assembly you would have an argument.

Why hasn't ODU legitimately hired anyone with political clout in Richmond? Yeah, I know they tried by giving Phil Hamilton a no-show job and he is in prison for it, but how about a legit president that has the leaders of the Virginia assembly on speed dial with relationships at the level that they attended his/her daughter's wedding? Has worked well for CNU.

You have no idea what ODU had to do to get Norfolk to even consider that expansion and what it cost. Other than the firestation that land was a shithole and now look at the benefit the City of Norfolk got. Norfolk could have helped us a lot more than infrastructure. The GA is a whole different topic. Our legislators get the worse committee assignments, have no pull, and ODU Alumns in the GA are virtually nonexistent. Add that to the fact that SE Va. is viewed as a third rate region compared to NoVa, Central Va. and even behind SW Va. The fact that we do not have a publicly supported Med. school in our region speaks volumes !

VCU has tremendous support and influence within the city; and rightfully so.
It has taken some really nasty areas of the city and turned them into "garden spots".
It has enhanced the economy and visibility of the region.
It has surpassed VT in enrollment

Basically, if VCU says they want or need to do something, the City responds with "Great! What do you need from us to support that effort?"

Below is an older article from the now defunct RVA News. It captures the essence of VCU expansion.

MrBigBlue makes a huge point in that. "The fact that we do not have a publicly supported Med. school in our region speaks volumes"

And ODU would do the exact same things in Norfolk if it only had the support from the state and local governments. Our campus is half surrounded by crime filled areas in desperate need of improvement and the state and city act like its their job to protect the hood and keep it from falling into the evil ODU's hands. The crime rep attached to ODU hurts it far more than anything else. We need a school that legislators in Richmond are proud to send their kids to. That doesn't happen too often.

That VCU article also states that only 900 out of 32,000 students are from the Richmond area. Less than 1 in 32?!?! Most come from the rich burbs around NoVa. Thats how you build school pride, campus community and future donors. I wonder what percentage of ODU students are from Hampton Roads? I'd bet its at least triple that amount, maybe worse.
