RE: Maisel: B1G took Rutgers after Georgia Tech (?!?!) turned them down
Deleany was obsessed with getting UNC into the big 10 but unless the big 10 was willing to jump to 18+ its not realistic plan. The problem with focusing on UNC the big 10 missed out on Missouri and Kansas + Oklahoma

Rutgers & ACC knew it was a done deal
This......GT was never in over RU.
Georgia Tech cracks open the ACC in a way that Maryland didn't. (Especially if it's Maryland *AND* Georgia Tech.) That puts UNC and UVA (the real prizes for the Big Ten) in play.
Rutgers is the 2AM last resort after you strike out with the core ACC schools that would bring the BTN to the entire south Atlantic region.
Rutgers was never school #12 or #13. But part of me feels that the cable boxes in NJ made us #14. GT alone would have been an island, and even GT with Maryland doesn't have the same feeling as GT, MD, UVa and UNC. That configuration would have been a winner for the Big 10.

The Big Ten was running the same squeeze play on the ACC that the ACC ran on the Big East Football Conference--if you say no, we'll give your spot to someone who will say yes and you'll be stranded. Losing GT plus UMD probably makes UNC think they HAVE to make a move, Big Ten or SEC.

Atlanta has brought in so many transplants that nearly half of the Power 5 schools have alumni watch parties on autumn Saturdays.

Nobody here thinks this is what happened, right? Any "Georgia Tech to the B1G" talk was weird and peripheral and, you know, after the Maryland/Rutgers acquisitions had happened. If I am remembering things right. Why would he pull this imaginary tidbit out of his hinder?
I thought it was common knowledge that Rutgers was always the B1G's target (all those cable boxes) and the issue was finding a partner for Rutgers. Am I mistaken?

I disagree. My take from several well placed RU and PSU alumni is we were very close to being #12. PSU, for as much as all Rutgers fans hate everything PSU, was the driving force behind the RU to B1G push. That was kiboshed when Nebraska suddenly came into play during the Pac 10 's aborted move to invite 6 B12 schools not named UN-L. Note Nebraska move came the day after Colorado announced it was going to the PAc, but prior to UT announcing it would stay in the B12. Though we weren't #12, the vetting process of RU showed very good financials for its inclusion in any future B1G expansion. Rutgers was in pocket, but it didn't move the needle enough to justify the B1G expanding beyond 12, without a second school to come along. With that, the B1G went looking for the partner school to bring along. From June 2010 on, the deal for Rutgers was always it would be #14, if that other school could be found. The B1G gave ND one more opportunity, looked at KU, but settled on UMd. Again, a move championed by PSU.
I never heard anything, other than internet speculation about a GT to B1G move. The ACC must have been nervous about something, because all the moves made during September of 2011 smell of desperation. There were rumors that the B1G was talking to UNC & UVa. There were also rumors about the B12 talking to FSU and Clemson and the SEC looking at NCSU and VT.

Waits to see if they accept because they're not bringing in just one school to make it 13. So no Maryland (or someone else) no Rutgers. It's not rocket science here. Exactly. From all other accounts, Rutgers was the ongoing partner in discussions for the Notre Dame attempts ever since the 1990s. Once it was certain that ND was not interested, the B1G happened to hear from the MD president and they agreed to partner up with Rutgers. Shortly afterwards, they reached out to GT & UNC for expanding to 16 but UNC immediately rejected them. Pretty sure that if the conference had decided on forgoing the academics slightly and went after FSU, GT would have joined on.

It's my recollection that the Big Ten was looking at making an ACC busting move to acquire 4 of: Maryland, UVA, UNC, Duke, and GT
When it became apparent that Delaney couldn't get them to bite Maryland and Rutgers became the back up plan.

I was trying to help you to see that you were wrong about being #12 or ahead of Maryland. Maryland was THE school for the BIG as it, in their minds, opens up access to the Southern ACC schools.

Correct JR. I didnt mention Nebraska because they were already invited to the BIG. My point has been that Maryland was the lynchpin for the next phase of BIG expansion, regarding programs that were accepting of the invites

I totally agree that Maryland was the key, but the numerology has been at error on multiple pages in this thread so I just wanted to make sure the younger folks realized that Nebraska was indeed the 12th member of the Big 10 and Maryland the 13th.
The underlined portions were just a bit foggy.

We were #12 until Nebraska came along, then we waited until a #14 (Maryland) came along.
This is just not true. Rutgers invitation was contingent on Maryland accepting and offer first. There are many articles available that will corroborate these facts. I have seen no articles that say that Rutgers was first over Maryland
Rutgers waits to see if Maryland accepts
Waits to see if they accept because they're not bringing in just one school to make it 13. So no Maryland (or someone else) no Rutgers. It's not rocket science here. If Maryland didn't go, then we would have waited for someone else. And no, it wouldn't have been syracuse.....If it helps you sleep at night as a Syracuse fan to think RU was 14 so be it.
Syracuse would be attractive to B1G in late 1980's and early 1990's. Until chancellor Nancy Cantor closed medical school, dial down engineering and computer science schools, leave AAU and focus on communication and social study only.
