Finally! The mystery man is David Shaw, a 2021 LHP from Kinkaid. Lanky tall lefty with a Chris Sale-like delivery that makes for really uncomfortable at-bats

Thanks for the info. 2-year wait, but it's about time we're starting to recruit southpaw pitching again.

Given he's currently only a Sophomore, I suspect that by the time he arrives on campus he'll grow another 2 - 3 inches (currently 6'4") and add another 4 - 5 MPH on his fastball. A taller, more deceptive Blake Fox?

Austin Bulman, a JUCO transfer from Wake Technical CC, is going to be at Rice next year. A 6-1 infielder, he hit .381 with 8 HR, 34 RBI and 18 steals last year.
Barring injury, I don't see him playing infield for us, unless it's 1B....and we have another JUCO, a power hitting left-handed bat, who is being projected for 1B/DH. Edwards, Cruz and Comeaux are pretty much locked in, as they should be, at 2B, SS and 3B. However, I can certainly see Bulman in one of the corner OF spots, especially if Gneitting moves to 1B. Don't we have another JUCO OFer coming in?

I think we knew about all of these guys except for Ryan Rickett, a RHP from Grayson County CC (and formerly Missouri before that). Seven Juco or 4-year college transfers is a pretty high number. I'd venture to say that's our highest total since Graham's early years at Rice.

Just like in Graham’s early years, Bragga is backfilling for immediate needs. I would bet that the number of Juco/grad transfers will go down as we go forward.

RE: Baseball Recruiting
First, my comments below have nothing to do with the young man who just committed.
I am amazed at the trend in all sports to recruit younger. I guess if more and more schools start doing it, everyone has to. If we stick to baseball, class of 2022 means only having played one year of high school baseball. Most have not played a season of varsity yet. If scholarships are offered to kids of this age, they have probably played select.
There are many issues here for me. First, these kids are probably not even 16 yet. At that age, I hardly knew what I wanted to do next week much less know what I wanted to do in three years, much less commit to it. These are verbal commits and things change. It seems like a school has to keep fighting for that commit until signing day. Things change. Maybe there are coaching changes. Maybe you become good friends with another kid and want to play together in college. Maybe your family moves. Maybe you improve tremendously and have all of the top schools knocking at your door.
At that age, I think it is difficult to judge talent and potential. Some kids have matured physically and some have not. I would guess that there are some kids who are physically ahead and can dominate because of that. Other kids may catch up to them after they get their growth spurts. However, some continue to get better even when the other kids catch up physically. How do you project the future for these kids? If kids dominate because of their level of physical maturity, how do they react mentally when the other kids close the gap?
I think this puts a lot of pressure on recruiters. If you have to offer kids at that age, do you only go after the proven ones or can you identify the potential of "late bloomers"? I can say that the best players in my leagues at 13/14 were not necessarily the best at 17/18, but some were.
Kids in small towns also have difficulty being seen. I know of someone who was 3 years all state at the 2A level, played short and pitched, and played in summers. Also was one of their better players in football and basketball. With no offers from D1, has played 3 years at D3 with a career batting average of about 360 with more walks than strike outs. I know he would not hit that in D1, but I don't think he would hit 250 either. If these kids had difficult odds of getting recruited to a D1 school previously, it is almost impossible if commitments happen prior to your sophomore year.
Sorry for the long post just to say that to me recruiting younger kids for baseball seems much more difficult and makes it harder to get excited about recruits until they sign. I think college recruiters have it more difficult projecting 15 year olds as 18 year olds than MLB scouts projecting HS and college players as pros. Also, it would seem that the recruiters have to lean more on the select team coaches than HS coaches since they would only have one year in HS.

Really good comments. Unfortunately this seems to be the path coaches are taking in recruiting younger classes. Also, once a kid commits and announces it to the world via Twitter, Facebook or Perfect Game they have somewhat sealed their fate to that one school as, for the most part, college baseball coaches (unlike college FB coaches who continue to work the kid to flip) tend to back off a kid once he makes that announcement. Also, if the kid does not develop from 14-18 there is no obligation that the coach has to sign them and other schools (maybe not at the same level) that may have also had interest are no longer available to the kid. This is evident when you look at PG commitments for a given class and there are 18+ boys on the list. In no way will 18 sign as scholarship or PWO's due to roster limits etc.
In earlier days your offers went out after your Junior season and in some cases after your Junior summer games. I wish it would go back to that but I just don't see it happening. Overall I think this early offer system is bad for the school (look bad when they pull offer due to non-development) and really bad for the kids (ultimately limits other options).

The 2020 roster is online now. It appears the other Owl transferring out was Joshua Larzabel (along with Jackson P.).

We received a commitment today from Graiden West, a 6-2 infielder from Katy Tompkins. He's a current junior - HS class of 2021.
