Keep for future reference top 25 Michigan High School players for 2017 courtesy of Steve Bell note he shows us with one verbal with Epps. I still think we're going guard for the 2017-2018:

Good list!
Maybe one more PG?
As of now, this is a very deep team. Staff can concentrate on coaching. Recruiting shouldn't be a big worry.

Yes a Hardy or Flowers would be nice to add, however I believe we still have one-two more scholies even if we added a PG. Orr on the list and Jessie Scarber from Detroit King (5'8 PG) have done on campus visits.

RE: 2016/17/18 Men's Basketball Recruiting
courtesy Steve Bell on Izzio Shoot Out scouting report:

Keion Epps 6-5 Sr Wayne: Under .500 last year, Wayne Memorial looks like it’s turned the corner going into coach Nkwame Young’s third season. With no center Epps has to play big, and he does on the glass with his activity, but he’s most comfortable and effective out on the court using his energy and length to make plays. His defensive gambling had mixed results. A long-time commitment to Eastern Michigan.

sounds alot like Tim Bond?

A wild card is the PG from Rouge. He would be a solid mid major target.

BTW, we have offered Flowers, a PG.

RE: 2016/17/18 Men's Basketball Recruiting
I wonder if we have any MBB scholarships to give for 2016/7?

I count:

Guards: Toney, Lee and Mangum.

SF: Bond

PF/C: Thompson, Nobles, Madray, LWH, Steele, Jones.

Sitouts: Jackson, Harris and Minnie

So IF Jones is on scholarship for 2016/17 (and I have NO idea) then we have 13 scholarships to 10 active players and 3 transfer sitouts.

IF Jones isn't on scholarship, then I'd guess we have one to give.

Make sense????

P.S. Are we playing 2016/17 with 10 scholarship players??? (3 sitouts is a LOT!!).

Yes walkons are necessary for practice. It should be noted that sitouts also serve as practice players.

That said, teams usually like around 15 players on the roster even though some rarely see PT.

If we can have Steve Bell's 2017 top 25 in MI, why not his 2018 top 25?

http://bankhoops.com/class-of-2018-michi...prospects/

I can see Murphy going hard for Davion Williams, Brandon Wade, and Tray Jackson. I believe we have offered at least one of the above.

EDIT: We have offered all three.

BTW, guess there is a lesson to learn from Murphy's recruiting:

"Patience is a virtue."

Murphy knows what he is looking for and has the patience to see it through even if the player commitment doesn't come in November, April, May or sometimes until June.

Of course, last year he waited late for a big man, JT4, and that turned out to be huge.

We had 3 PG prospects and hit on the 3rd one, Jackson, after losing out on the JUCO and the Towson transfer.

BTW, I just looked up some info on him from a 2015/16 hoops mag (very good).

Described by his coach as a 'blur' who needs to harness that speed and work on decision making and jump shot.

Has big upside.

He improved a LOT his soph year and put up decent numbers. He averaged 10 ppg his last 6 games. Shot 19/36 from the field including 6/11 behind the arc.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketba...ul-jackson

My guess is that he will be the type of player who benefits from a transfer sitout year, even given the improvement from frosh to soph years.

P.S. Wonder if he and Ty Toney know each other? They are both from suburban Atlanta. Just curious...

Don't know if EMU would be interested (and have a scholarship to give) for this grad eligible who is now available:

"Malcolm Bernard told ESPN he is back on the market. Grad transfer who had committed to Richmond."

SF who can rebound and averaged 14 ppg at Florida A&M last season.

I hate to speculate just by seeing a couple dots and decide it would be nice if they were connected. Lol.

I find this transfer for 2017/18 very interesting.

A kid from IL who went to N. H. and played his frosh year and did okay. He has since transferred (for next season) to Des Moines Area C.C. which is where we got Nazione and Steele and where John Bowler coaches.

Appears to be a 3-point shooting SG.

Enough said?

BTW, I saw an evaluation of Epps from a recruiting site.

My take: Tim Bond II. Think the same general body type, game, etc.

Would NOT be confused with say Toney, Mangum, Lee, etc.

I'm glad we got a solid in state high school player in Epps, I'm hoping we'll complete the 2017-2018 class with some others.

On the other hand its hard to criticize Murphy for the three Div I sit outs that will be eligible for that season. I mean all three have two seasons of playing experience at Div I which in my mind puts them above most JUCO recruits or high school recruits and thus better than most MAC teams in conference will do with high school and/or JUCO recruits.

Definitely high expectations going into this year and the following season.

Completely agree with you.

Recruits like Madray, Jackson, Minnie, etc. have very nice stats (ave. of say 7 - 12 ppg) at the D-I level. Madray is a good 3-point shooter. Jackson is impressive with the assists. Minnie had impressive stats at Robert Morris.

They are like 'money in the bank', as close to 'ready-made' as recruits become.

I really like the '3 to play 2 transfers' because they have a year to acclimate to the system and should be ready to hit the court running.

Typical frosh are not impact players (JT4 is a REAL exception, rare exception at the mid-major level). They spend their first year become D-I players.

I'm not Johnnie-come-lately on transfers. I liked when Braun brought some in (some left, etc.) but I did like them and was willing to wait a year for them to get on the court.

Some might find this NCAA listing of initial-eligibility status terms of interest...

http://www.ncaa.org/student-athletes/fut...92399&jb=1

I found this one interesting. Sounds like a 'blast from the past...' Used to be called a 'partial qualifier', I believe.

"Academic redshirt: For student-athletes who enroll at a Division I school after Aug. 1, 2016. You may practice with your team during your first semester of full-time college enrollment and receive an athletics scholarship during your first year of full-time college enrollment but you may not compete during your first year of full-time college enrollment."

RE: 2016/17/18 Men's Basketball Recruiting
To show how thin recruiting classes in MI can be. This year, 2016, was a very thin class. According to Prep Hoops rankings, a total of 18 2016 MI h.s. seniors signed with D-I schools. A total of TWO signed with high major programs; those were Cassius Winston (MSU) and Austin Davis (UofM). No other MI h.s. players signed with high major schools.

The coming year's class (2017) is expected to be much, much deeper. I believe I saw a quote from Steve Bell about possibly 50 D-I recruits...
