Banging out the hits with some Judas Priest, Metallica, and Audioslave.

Been rocking this in the car though

Haters hate, this was a pretty good disc IMO.

a very different take on this song from the soggy bottom boys.

That was a cool one, dahbeed. Here's another "Kentucky" themed song for you:

Artist: Neil Diamond
Cut: "Kentucky Woman"
Bang Records 1967

lol. believe it or not back in 1973 as a freshman at lake weir high school in florida (living in the ocala national forest) i joined the columbia house record club and bought 9 eight track tapes for a PENNY! neil diamond was one of them.

can't remember how many times i joined columbia house, fulfilled obligation and quit and waited for a new great offer. i'd always rejoin for the big deal up front. built hella cd collection that way. still have most of them.

i have no idear where i ran across skeewiff. oddball mix. but i'm pretty open about music. i created a skeewiff station on my pandora and like some of the other stuff it's exposing me to.

interesting considering this thread...

Research proves popular music is dumb

What was the last book you read during elementary school? It turns out that book might have a lot in common with your favorite songs.

A new analysis published on data blog SeatSmart says the average reading level of lyrics to Billboard's top-ranking songs has dropped steadily over the past 10 years -- now below the third-grade level.

Country was named the smartest genre, though that's not saying much since its average reading level was barely above third grade. On the other hand, hip-hop had the lowest score at a grade level of 2.6.

So second-graders are apparently well-represented by hip-hop radio.

"I refuse to believe that one," Gayle King said on "CBS This Morning."

Yeah, Gayle. We feel you. But before we all switch to country, we should note the study might have some flaws.

Word length was a key variable. As the study's author Andrew Powell-Morse put it: "Country is the only genre generally devoid of words like 'oh' or 'yeah' repeated 20 times in a row. Sorry everyone else, but if you say it in the song, it's counted as a 'lyric.'"

But as The A.V. Club noted earlier this year, more bands are using the words "woah-oh-ohh" in the chorus. We have to know: Do the hyphens make it all one long word?

Country also got a boost in its score due to the weight given to syllable length, and HLN anchors saw the irony in that. (Video via Sony Music Entertainment / Miranda Lambert)

"Okay, but you know what he said? The reason country scored highest is because they have long syllable words like hillbilly and cigarettes. He said that!" Jennifer Westhoven said.

"Or camouflage," Robin Meade said, laughing.

And finally, some rappers actually scored relatively high. Eminem and Nicki Minaj's lyrics were given a 3.7 and 3.4 respectively.

So we can't take everything the analysis said to heart, but maybe it should make us take a look at our favorite songs a bit more closely.

As Time pointed out, one of last year's hit songs by Ariana Grande made arguably zero sense, with lyrics like "I only want to die alive," and "Now that I've become who I really are."

Those are errors even a second-grader could spot.

As a fan more so of early 2000s and prior rap music than what passes for rap today.... there is no doubt that the art of rapping, at least in popular/main stream rap, is for the most part dead.

There was a lot of intelligence in the raps, the style, the commentary, and heck, even the beats when you had the following artists putting out music:

Public Enemy
EPMD
Big Daddy Kane
KRS ONE/Boogie Down Productions
A Tribe Called Quest
NWA
LL Cool J
Slick Rick
Beastie Boys
RUN DMC
De La Soul
Ice T

so much knowledge, so much dense lyrics, much better story telling, ect.... the cussing every other word, thug life, and "up in da club" stuff showing up everywhere now just kind of kills the vibe IMO. I mean, even each of those groups had their song or two in those veins but for the most part it was legit stuff being rapped about.

I totally agree. I find the modern rap cuts that I like are few and far between. It's not just an 'old' thing, but as you say, rap used to mean a heck of a lot more then than it does now. What a shame.

edit: I've got CDs and vinyl (yeah I still have all my vinyl) by almost everyone in your list. Bought them all when they came out, before most were even mainstream in the rap world. That's how exciting I used to find rap music back then.

reposted here from the Spin Room "Scott Walker Issues" thread. I LUUUV this video

At this point, I'm voting for Holly Green. Here's a video on why (it's political 2nd half if you watch):

I like her angles and tone on the issues!

One of the funniest moments I ever recall from my Ex Wife's grandfather occurred one day when he answered the phone. It was one of those join a record club and get a bunch of free albums then you are hooked for life deals. His son had taken the free music then collected a few more albums but never paid. Tex (that was the grandfathers' name) listened to the guy trying to find the guy and affirmed that he knew him and was his father. He listened for a while and then lit into the guy telling him he should be ashamed and what a low down dirty thing it was to call on the day he just found out that his son was killed in action in Vietnam. Tex had just thought that up at that moment. He was a very colorful guy and to this day I quote him. "It don't take much brains to be stupid!" Tex Martin
Granny comes out at the BBQ and says "Oh my I forgot the condiments" Tex stands up quickly and says "Granny don't use those kinds of words in front of the youngins!"

A great debut cd IMO. Liked them from the beginning. Always good production values on every disc of theirs.

Loved these guys from the beginning. Since I first got this on tape, I was that side a was more rock and side b was more freelance. It was also my 2nd cd I owned. Lots of great tracks on this.

Time's UP was a great follow up but also totally different. Lots more political, relationship, and cultural exploration and commentary. I thought their funniest work was Elvis is Dead. But this album had tons of great tunes other than that.

*this video also has videos of tracks off Stain, their 3rd album. Which was way more raw and experimental. I liked it for what it was and it also had some great tracks, but it was "darker" than their previous two.

Liked that one. (Lyric needs a little cleaning up but funny idea!)

People today don't know what they're missing with songs like these. Even mainstream country music isn't the same. Thanks for that post, Dog!

RE: OT: CUSA board Music thread (what are you listening to right now?)
Inspired by a post in another music thread, I just listened to this:

F* the black album haters... the whole disc was great. I'd argue it got me into Metallica officially at that point. I then proceeded to work the back catalog with my 2nd entry of Master of Puppets. Then I got the bug to get the others in the back catalog so I copped Kill Em All, Ride the lightning, and ...And Justice For All. MoP is probably my 2nd favorite album of theirs from "that era." Load and ReLoad were ok... St Anger was decent but not great. Garage Inc was incredible. I got into that one they did with the Symphony Orchestra.

I liked this album a lot. Creed is a good band.

*******************
*******************

PTNC presents: Slow Jamz
*while its true I like metal/rock and rap mostly....I can chill out on some SLOW jams

Don't front, you know you'd hit it

--Yeah, I bought BIIM's II...great disc. Mowtown Philly sounded too flavor of the month to me but... this one I liked a lot.
