RE: ESPN HD Kent State vs Robert Morris Game
Flashes went on a solid run propelled by Manns (defensively) and Greene (offensively). KSU was up 4 with the ball and Holt sort of elbowed a guy on his way to the bench at a timeout to get the Tech. RM made one free throw and then hit a 3 to tie the game. It was an iffy call if you ask me. Then with game tied and about 30 secs left we ran a play to JG that was tipped away and Holt caught the ball in the corner and drilled a 3. Traded a basket for some free throws at the end and won by 3.

+1. Losing the second game in a row on a T would have been too much.
The only bright side may be that Holt has started to find his stroke and he learned a lesson.
Other bright spots:
1. Greene with a complete game AGAIN.
2. Manns. This kid is going to be a lot of fun to watch.
3. Gaines’ defense.

RE: ESPN HD Kent State vs Robert Morris Game
Sherman has a "very mild concussion" but the doctors thought it best he not play. Ford didn't say how it happened, but I'm guessing it was in the 2nd half of the Cleveland State game, during that collision that had him holding his head in pain.
The good: (1) coming from down 13
(2) doing it without "The Rock"
The bad: (1) The technical on Holt, that turned a 4 point lead and the ball into a nailbiter. Absolutely NO excuse for the FOUR technicals on players already this year. I say sit all four against Urbana. If they lose, that should drive it home. Don't forget a win over Urnana doesn't count for RPI, anyway, or for "wins" when it comes to post-season selection or seeding.
(2) The rest of the "bad" can all be explained by inexperience and the unusal circumstances of the four games in less than four full days.

The T on Holt was legit. Ridiculous and unneccessary (see 0:54 of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG7Upx3SN...=related). I'm glad to see he played better though.
This team is hot and cold and that's going to drive me nuts. When they can consistantly play near the top of their game, they are going to be unstoppable.
I really like what I've seen of Robert Johnson (BTW, is he going by Robert or Scooter?).

Attendance for the 6 AM Stony Brook/Monmouth game: 2,308
Attendance for the 8 AM Robert Morris/Kent State game: 1,497
But I still love how loud the MACC can still get when it is less than a quarter full. They actually asked everyone sitting in the upper bleachers to move down to the lower section.

Very interesting. Glad I didn't burn a sick day but would have loved to be there. To me, the best part is hearing the Gaines seems to be a capable contributor. With the possible depth in the backcourt that Kent has (albeit new and green depth) my message would be: the one who defends is the one who gets in the rotation.

Well said. The game was a tale of two halves. At halftime, I thought we were well on our way to a blowout. The defensive pressure and offensive tempo were much better in the second half. They obviously still have a long way to go on both ends of the court (can't stop dribble penetration on one end, too much one-on-one ball on the other), but this was a nice win given all of the extenuating circumstances.
I sat next to the RM coach's fiancee and her family. Nice folks.

RE: ESPN HD Kent State vs Robert Morris Game
I just got back from the game and I have to credit the student section for giving the team some serious energy to feed off of in the 2nd half. Geno even went into the stands after the game and gave the student section some high fives.
I give a lot of credit also to the coaching staff and players for making the necessary adjustments, executing, and making the buckets they had to.
The T was very frustrating but was yet another obstacle that we overcame in a game that can be used as a great learning tool.
I can't wait for Furman on Friday. Now off to work.......
Go Flashes!

Gaines is a stud. Cat like quick (especially @ 6'3") and tenacious. If he ever gets a jumper going, he would be one of the best all around players in the MAC. He probably already is one the top 10 defenders. He is fearless.

I'm still concerned with our guards not containing opposing guards. They penetrate, turn the corner and we are a step behind. Also our inability to get the ball inside consistantly. They could not stop Greene but we seemed to rely on our side shooting.

I agree with all that you write but a huge part of KSU's problems were that RMU's guards are incredibly quick, extremely strong, explosive and they all defend very very well. They played as hard (defensivley and going to the hole) as I can remember seeing a team play in the MAC Center. I have to admit, at halftime, I thought KSU was done (simply overmatched at the guard spots). IMO, Porrini and Holt are OK. Just OK. Really goods guards will dominate both of them (getting by them and turning them over). I think you may see Sherman, Guyton and Gaines eventually end playing the most minutes.

RE: ESPN HD Kent State vs Robert Morris Game
Superfan was heard loud throughout the nation this morning. On the ESPN marathon blog they just could not get enough of her (sarcasm)
Here's some of the finest:
"I think I now hate Kent State just for that lady's incessant screeching."
"The Screeching Woman is like Michael Jordan: She just gets stronger as the game goes on."
"I fell asleep and woke up to the woman SCREECHING on my TV....thought it I left it on a horror movie...nope just that lady at the Kent State basketball game."

I have had to deal with that scream for years now and it does not get any easier, especially since she likes to stand by the band.

The only way the screamer will leave is if Kent gets so bad she loses interest. Based on that we will just have to put up with her. I know her a little and Kent State sports is a huge part of her life so just learn to turn the screeching out. Her intentions are good.

RE: ESPN HD Kent State vs Robert Morris Game
I agree with the talent level being high but the guards do worry me (I know having Rod out hurt but after this year he is out forever so these guys have to learn to play without him). Too much one on one in the first half. No patience. Gino has his work cut out for him. If they listen to him we will be very good but until they prove they will listen I'm nervous. The only reason we won was because RMU went ice cold for the first 6 minutes of the 2nd half and I don't think our defense caused it they just decided to start missing. Well I can't complain about a 3-1 start. Let's just hope we continue at that pace all year and improve as we do it.

I agree with Kent 76 in that Rod being out was probably from the CSU game. He went down hard face first in that game and laid on the ground for a good minute. Glad I used my vacation for this game, going to a breakfast KSU game cannot be beat. Kudos to the team for coming out hard in the second half. Nice to see the university the crowd up top move down.

I am on vacation this week, and it was great to be at the MAC Center! What a comeback in the second half, and Justin Manns was huge on the defensive end with a block underneath the made the building sound like it was sold out! And Randall Holt hitting the three following a technical foul! Great game. I'll tell you what, Manns has a chance to be a defensiv e force if he makes up his mind to be!! This team has a chance to be really good when it's all said and done. Did anybody notice the changes in Rizman Plaza next to the student center. Place looks great, by the way!

From what I understand, Tigers kicked some Miami tail!! I have been a Memphis fan since my sister was at St. Jude! She is doing fine now, and this was in the day of Keith Lee and company! GO TIGERS AND KSU!!!!
