Going after AI
Quote:But beyond the political sparring, some of the country’s richest investors were focused on a potentially bigger consequence of the Democratic sweep: the future of the AI boom.
Even before polls closed Tuesday, Pershing Square founder Bill Ackman warned on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” that slowing AI development could jeopardize America’s technological edge. “Practically speaking, we can’t slow down,” he said.
As results rolled in Tuesday night, billionaire investor Chamath Palihapitiya sounded an even starker warning.
Palihapitiya initially questioned whether the early results would hold, but warned that if they did, the implications for the AI trade could be severe.
“And the only way to sink the AI trade is to sink the data centers,” Palihapitiya said during an election night livestream of the “All-In” podcast.
Texas offered an early test of those fears. Democratic Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa, who has proposed a moratorium on new data center construction until stronger safeguards are established, defeated three-term Republican incumbent Greg Abbott.
During the same livestream, Altimeter Capital CEO Brad Gerstner warned the Democratic wave could mean at least 10 to 15 gigawatts of expected AI data center capacity would not come online in 2027. Wall Street analyst Dan Ives estimated Wednesday that 10% of planned U.S. data centers would no longer go ahead.
Those same billionaires probably voted blue.

I called this yesterday. Yesterday, the markets were up merely because the uncertainty of who would prevail was known. Markets hate uncertainty. The market had a day to digest what it actually means given the Dems won, and you see the result today. A diversified portfolio and dollar cost averaging helps to negate lots of the risks from day-to-day market swings.
I just don't feel two days solely tells the overall story. Time is needed. But we'll see.
So you need to get hit a bunch of times.

I had a baby brother like that. Once was never enough to shut him up.

I agree two days is too short to tell the entire story. The market is digesting where the Dems stand on certain issues and, as a result, we saw the AI selloff yesterday. However, as well all know, Congress loves insider trading, so I expect to see AI rebound fairly soon. Maybe not to previous levels, but Congress will not ignore the opportunity to make serious money.

yeah I wish to thank the American people for killing my IRA. I may go back to work part time in January if this keeps up. Lost
5k since Tuesday, I am glad most of my money is out of the stock market. I keep about 70% in fixed assets for safety and only 30% in stocks.

The tech industry is figuring out (1) how very many people in the world distrust AI and dislike data centers, and (2) how very much debt investors have taken on for infrastructure that has yet to show a profit.
Lately even the tech CEOs have been insisting: the public belongs in this discussion.
It will get figured out.

I agree, but the older you get the less time you have to wait out the rebound. It can happen quickly or it can take years.
time in downturns can range from 1 month to a couple of years. and recoveries can take months to years. From beginning of downturn to recovering those losses can easily be 2 to 5 years, and if adjust for inflation even longer.
That said I think other than deficit, and inflation the underlying economy is pretty solid. Trump is bringing in tons of investments that really have not been felt yet.

Bit dramatic, the stock market dropped to the same level it was at in August of this year. 3 whole months ago.

(Yesterday 03:29 PM)Attackcoog Wrote: Markets price in the expectations of market participants. If you see it in the news----its priced into the market. The expectation that Democrats would win the mid-terms was expected and was already priced into the market. However, the SIZE of the Democrat win was completely UNEXPECTED and was NOT priced into the market. So, what we have now are market participants still trying to figure out who actually wins and who actually loses in a world where Democrats have a much larger congressional majority than anyone expected (not to mentions taking over state offices and legislatures that everyone believed were solidly red).
Let the orchestrated stilted economy begin. There is time behind the scenes to prop up the economy and there must be FREE or at the very least mention of FREE by the Dems to placate the masses before the proverbial rug is pulled out from under them and things continue to get more unaffordable with a dose of inflation. Commodities will continue to uptick while the masses wait on their Government fed Grocery stores.
This is where the herd always get burned. Dems are preaching socialism and the herd mentality falls for it over and over and the results are always the same. Authoritarian or Dictatorships follow Socialism like a coyote trailing a wounded rabbit. The herd then laments and forgets it is cycle of wash rinse repeat.
The even better part about all of this is you have those who either have never read a history book in their life or they are so narcissistic to believe it wont happen to us are here on this forum spewing the same old tired mantra since the Red Revolution and they follow the path of propaganda laid out by Trotsky. Todor is the end result.

On a serious note, TB4E ... I can post only so many times about the conservative views I hold and about Republicans I have voted for in the past. At some point, I'm wasting my time.
If you and some others on the right feel I am a "closet lefty," that's fine. Not accurate. But no problem.
