03-lmfao still can't see what happened can you? He got played like a fiddle and based on the results last night it worked.

The Reps weren't going to win this election cycle no matter what, so whatever you're seeing I can't, doesn't matter either way. He had no coattails in 2024, so how was that supposed to get better this time?

Would it have been this bad had he wrapped Iran up sooner? Probably. Might have kept the Senate. Who knows?

He shouldn't have attacked Iran PERIOD until after the mid terms if at all. That's where you're completely wrong. That was an incredibly stupid idea. Trying to give him a tiny benefit of the doubt here... I think chances are decent he got some bad intel but his ego wouldn't let him wait until after the mid terms. Plus all the other stupid **** mentioned in here - just being a retard in general.

You liked the idea of the world's leading sponsor of terrorism having nukes I see.

Then how do does that explain Greg Abbott in Texas? That was a good candidate that has run the state well---who nobody thought was in trouble. This was a perfect storm election. There were multiple factors that all combined to create an overwhelming storm that the Republicans had little chance of overcoming without a near historic mid-term Republican turnout.

We had a mid-term election where the president's party almost always loses seats. Additionally, the party was led by a president who has fumbled the Iran War, driven up gas prices, cozied up to a VERY unpopular Russian dictator, enacted tarriffs that increased prices, needlessly treated allies worse than enemies (the result of which is a Trump job approval rating in the low 30's). We have an economy where most young adults---along with most of the lower and middle class are facing an increasingly difficult affordability crisis where their standard of living is perceptibly falling---not rising. Then---I would agree---in some cases---you can add in the fact that the Republicans had some less than stellar candidates in some assorted races.

Overall---like I said----It was a perfect storm of factors that conspired to deliver a historic reversal for the Republicans.

It is called guilt by association. Trump handpicked Paxton, who proved to be unacceptable to a large swath of Texas voters. These voters came out - - either to vote against Paxton the person or to vote against the arrogance of the big-mouth New Yorker who pushed this unacceptable choice upon Texas residents.

Does split-ticket voting happen? Sure, I’ve occasionally done it. But it is rare. And those motivated enough to vote anti-Paxton (or by extension anti-Trump) we’re not likely to limit their dishing out of punishment to one line on the ballot. That punishment extended to every part of the Texas ballot.

This nationwide obliteration can be blamed on many factors. But the core factor is a deeply unpopular president who insists on making himself front and center.

I wonder what the odds are on Polymarket for Hegseth making it till Christmas?

I really wonder what the midterm results are going to do about the rumors of another large attack on Iran.

But, now Talafreako will have to prove that what he said in the end is not what he said in the beginning. To go the Scamburger route maybe but he for sure will have eyes on his doings. He's a liar and for sure he'll find another lie to fall to and stupid people who think this nutjob is a real Christian will still vote for him. If Talafreako is a Christian then Marx is too.

I'm tired of politics, I'm thinking of boycotting it...maybe, LOL.

Doesnt really matter. Talarico got in and will be free to show his true colors voting as a hard left progressive for the next 6 years. Nothing can be done about that. Texas Republicans who sat at home on election day will realize very quickly that sentencing Texans to Talarico for the next 6 years was about the dumbest thing they have ever done. The good news is---other than the Senate seat---the Democrat sweep of Texas statewide offices can and will be undone just 2 short years from now. Given the Texas Legislature only meets once every 2 years---the amount of damage they can do is fairly limited. 04-cheers

Well...statewide elected offices are every 4 years. Democrats control the State House now, but Republicans managed to maintain strong control in the Senate with a 19-12 adavantage. I wonder how many of the people Abbot primaried over school choice vouchers ended up switching parties? My guess is all of them. With divided control overall, it will be extremely tough for Democrats to do much more than change the enforcement focus of State Agencies.

The State flipped back and forth pretty regularly until the past 30 years, and we all turned out fine. I think it will do the Republicans a lot of good to refocus and find some fresh blood. Perhaps Brooke Rollins comes back home to run for Governor in 2030, I think she'd destroy Hinojosa.

Rubio is a Swamp Creature & Vance I don't think s/ win just b/c he was VP.

But the Swamp always wins.

DeSantis or Cruz feel more likely today, though it could be just about anybody right now. Will depend on what Trump does over the next 2 years. If he keeps acting like he has the past 2 years, anyone associated with him will be radioactive for a while, opening the door to some Republican Governors or Senators. Would be hilariously ironic if Cornyn or Tillis ran, or someone like Liz Cheney who would be much more palatable to Trump-weary Republicans and also to moderate dems and independents who don't like a potentially quite liberal Democrat nominee in 2028 like Newsome or AOC. However, I don't think it will really matter. I think that 2028 will probably be a big win again for Democrats, and it won't be until 2030 that Republicans start to recover as people start to forget just how nuts Trump's time in office was.

In this hyperpartisan era, roughly 10% of registered Republicans voted straight democrat. Not just in blue States, but in Texas, Kansas, Iowa, even South Carolina. Mississippi is at 98% chance to turn blue if Kalshi can be believed. Take whatever lesson you like, spin it however you like, but this didn't happen b/c the red team governed like all stars the past 2 years.

Vance in his own words:

"...Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026.

There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true.

But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone.

Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were:

1) End the war
2) Focus on cost of living/inflation
3) Put America First
4) Change our relationship to Israel..."

Maybe 4) is why the US dropped its 4 billion in aid. Its kind of a disturbing thing that many in both parties hate Israel.
2) and 3) are obvious. I think 1) is just that it interferes with 2) and 3). We aren't sending troops.

The Republican voters did NOT show up in Georgia. Georgia was one of those places with low turnout.

I have no dislike of Israel whatsoever. My dad's best friend, and one of my favorite people growing up, was jewish. However, even someone who like me who has a predisposition to be friendly towards Jews in general has many questions about how it helps the US to tie our ship to Israel forever. I get that in the post-WW2 world, there was a huge amount of sympathy for Israel after the Holocaust, but that was 80 years ago. I think that many Americans today just don't have super strong feelings one way or the other for Israel, and their government's actions often harm their standing with the American public.

Vance, as a committed isolationist, is certainly far less concerned about Israel than most of us, and he's always going to lean against long term commitments where possible. NATO, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, the 5 eyes, any or all of them, if they don't serve long term US interests and they're not in our hemisphere, he'll jettison them.

The war wasn't about stopping Iran from getting nukes, it was Netanyahu telling Trump to help him take out Iran's leadership and Trump deciding that Iran would be just as easy as Venzuela was. Iran requires a ton of boots on the ground to "win", and the country that came out of it afterwards would love us no more than Iraq does now. Is that worth losing thousands of young American lives, with the benefit of keeping a belligerent Iran from ever aiming nukes at us or our allies? I think it probably does, Trump thought he could achieve a win with little fallout by dropping $50b worth of bombs.

Iran ofc realized that hiking up oil prices would tank Trump in the midterms. How angry will Trump be about that? Angry enough to go into regime change mode? I hope so.

No, he is not going into regime change mode, he is going into "blame the democrats" mode. "I would have beaten Iran but then the democrats won the mid-terms and made me stop and go home. I didnt lose the war, the democrats did".

I guarantee it.

Good analysis. I’ll add that the economy wasn’t appreciably different with Biden; it has just been “bad” for young adults and the lower/middle class since the pandemic. Trump just did a horrible job empathizing with those impacted.

I almost hope Trump works with the Democrats to finally fix the economy. Biden didn’t do it; Republicans didn’t the last 2 years. I’m not even sure HOW it can be fixed, but perhaps Trump+Democrats will produce a winning combo. He has some interesting ideas about state equity in AI.

It is not just that high prices make things difficult. It is that in 2026 they can be traced to specific boneheaded decisions by the administration (tariffs on imports, closing the Strait of Hormuz).

That’s devastating. The first rule in leadership, as in medicine, is “Do no harm.”

It’s hard enough to win as an incumbent when the economy is ailing. Joe Biden knew well that inflation can prove an albatross even in a post-pandemic recovery. Bush 41 lost in the post-Desert Storm recession of 1992.

It becomes impossible to win when voters decide the incumbent is not only the cause of the problem, but too out of touch to notice.

The Trump idea of how to meet the moment was to go out and simply tell everyone the economy is great, tell everyone the press and other candidates were lying. After that, change the subject. Freely associate about airplanes and ballroom, helicopter rides and Mar-A-Lago parties, which people around him have good bodies and which people he thinks dress well, how evil the press is while they are standing right there covering him, which people persecute him and which people call him “sir.”

Basically, to keep telling you how much more glamorous and important his life is than yours. To hope that, as long as the audience gets a red hat and vicarious sense of involvement, maybe he gets its vote one more time.

As a voter you quickly get the message that this person is not paying attention. He is telling you as much. What you, and so many around you, deal with every day is not showing on this man’s radar.

So you turn to people who do pay attention.

And if you are a younger voter you look for younger candidates. You need someone who gets it. Who gets you.

It caps a trend. The MAGA believers have been gradually draining away over the last couple of months.

A half dozen or so kept posting to keep the pace up, as we saw. But MAGA had none of the issues in the election and it became obvious in their posts. “I hate Muslims and Commies” blew itself out as a rallying cry in September and they had nothing left. It was a last gasp.

It’s been all ad hom since. Insult others, post laugh emojis about the Wall Street Journal as a news source. Anything. Just keep the filter up so you can keep believing.

Weak.

07-coffee3

The Spin Room for now looks refreshingly normal.

Not “lefty.” Just normal.

NC is just now VA. Blue creep down the coast.

I agree. I blame Covid. Due to work from home abilities, so many people escaped their previous states due to high taxes, high rent, etc for a cheaper and better life down south. And then went and voted for the exact things they escaped from.

Still pushing this lazy ass narrative. Y'all need to let go of this and look at the real numbers of who moved and how badly the GOP got beaten. The reality of # of people relocating isn't anywhere close to enough to explain that. You'd have to assume literally every transplant from the Northeast is a liberal AND voted AND moved to VA and NC. It ignores the fact that a lot of people moving south are sick of the Northeast politics (I know plenty like that). Your take lets the GOP off the hook for running awful candidates.

In 2024, most people moving to North Carolina came from Florida, South Carolina, and Virginia.

North Carolina gained nearly 340,000 people from other states in 2023, year-over-year, according to recent Census data. Of those new residents, about 40,000 came from Florida — the most from a single state.
