State law does govern special elections. Specific differences, no idea. That part of reason for the timing of the roy moore hit job. Too late to change ballot, not enough time for due process. It was all carefully contrived.

It's nationally blue but not locally... Remember Franken won the first time by an insanely small margin. That Deomcratic Govornor won his first term in the same way.

dunno. MN wasn't as far as people may think in 2016. it was 30K votes, and a percentage point. trump nearly flipped that one, too.

I was going to say MN was really close last time. Trump winning the 1 state Reagan lost would have really been fun.
The spolier candidate from Utah got 53K votes in MN while Trump lost to Clinton by 44K. He had a real shot

Jill Stein also was a thorn in the side of Hillary clinton. Jill got a lot of votes from Democrats and Independents who did not like both candidates. A lot of votes for the Independents this last election shows there are many people who are dissatisfied with both parties. Yeah, people did not like neither Trump and Clinton. If you add all the third party votes up as one? You can see how many people are upset with both Democrats and Republicans and it is growing every year as people moving into the Independent party from both parties.

In MN, Clinton beat Trump by about 44k votes

GOP spoiler from Utah got about 53k

Stein and the Greens got about 37k

So that's a net loss of about 16k for Trump

Now Gary Johnson got about 113k votes

I think its safe to assume that In a pure 2 party race Trump would won over 30k of those voters, less than 30%. Clinton would have had to win over 70% of Johnson voters.

I think it's very reasonable to conclude without 3rd Parties, Trump would have won MN

while I don't disagree with your logic, there is one variable I noticed that is missing.....

it's very plausible in a pure two party race that a large percentage of (I) votes would've simply abstained.....

regardless, it was very (happily) surprising how MN voters reacted in totality......there must be something about that #mypillow thingy
