Virginia - geewizNU - 12-15-2023 08:46 PM

NU returns from a 10-day break to visit #22 UVA.

This is only the second meeting between the two and that was back in 1989 - when I was a sophomore.

Yet another game I think NU can play well and keep it close, but UVA will pull away at the end and win this one.

That's how I see it, too. This is a pay day. I don't know how much they are paying us but it will pay for a lot of recruiting visits and harden our guys against superior talent. A win for us would be keeping it to a less than fifteen point loss.

That last OOB play.....shaking my head

RE: Virginia - NUGUY - 12-16-2023 08:15 PM

It was nice to get PridGen back.

This team continues to get better especially in terms of defence and effort.

Bad team don't take top 21/22 teams down to the wire.

I agree with you. Really good effort. We are going to be in 10 CAA games that go down to the final 4 minutes. How we perform in those will tell the tale of the 23-24 season.

I would be surprised if that was the inbound pass that was drawn up in the timeout. Were we out of timeouts?

Edit: I rewatched the end of the game and it looks like that WAS what they drew up in the time out.

That out-of-bounds play had no chance and was atrocious. But it should've never come down to that.

Interesting that Nwagha didn't play.

Per KenPom, we're 29 point underdogs, which is the exact margin of UVA's win over Drexel on Tuesday, they started that game with a 25-4 run and never really looked back. Hopefully we can keep it more competitive than that, that's really my only hope for today.

Also hoping we see Miles Newton on the court today. I saw on their social videos he made the trip down and seemed to be participating.

I figured playing a Power 4 team deserves its own topic thread... Tonight's game is on ACC Network and ESPN+.

Like RollSkies said, it would be nice to get Newton back. I also saw Jung in practice gear instead of civies as well. NU could use some additional height and athleticism, because Pinter and Koelsch will have issues with UVA's athletic bigs.

UVA killed Drexel in the frontcourt and DU has several big men.

The only way we stay in this one is if our guards shoot really well and we don't get completely dominated on the boards.

Thanks for reupping the thread, geewiz. Honestly, I had completely forgotten we played Virginia back in 2023, a pretty forgettable team that was somehow one of the better years we've put together post-Tyson Walker ...

Anyway! Agreed, the key to staying competitive at all will be on the boards. Feels like it already will be the theme of the season. For the record I believe Jung was dressed for the BU game, he just didn't play, who knows what his status is. With 2 other guys in street clothes already (Icitovic, Godwin), maybe him and Miles were emergency options only.

NU is a 34.5 point underdog... Yikes.

RE: Virginia - geewizNU - 11-06-2026 09:35 PM

At least we beat the spread! NU loses at #9 Virginia 97-72.

Rashad King had 26 and Louis Bond had 23.

UVA led 38-31 at the half, before outscoring NU 59-41 in the 2nd half. UVA only had a 26-22 rebounding advantage, but UVA had 11 offensive boards to just 5 for NU.

UVA also hit 12 3's, NU hit just 6.

NU hosts Harvard for their home opener Tuesday night at 7pm.

It may still be to early to know how good or bad we will be but as of now here are my thoughts....

It looks like Bond is the real thing and I'm satisfied with Loughnane but they and King need more help.

Grosber and especially Young look promising but both are trying to do too much. The last things we need from them are turnovers and stupid fouls.

Right now we don't have a reliable bench. It was great to see Jung on the court. He got four minutes and four points and those four points were our only four bench points. Pinter, Koelsh and Baptiste were invisable......again.

It was nice to see that Goodwin and Icitovic made the trip. That probably means that they atr close to returning.

I get that we were playing a talented top ten team. How we do against Harvard will probably tell us more about what this season will look like.

Not doing cartwheels over giving up 95 ppg against BU and VA

The defense leaves a lot to be desired after 2 games. It's one thing to give up that many points at UVA, but not BU. However, I don't know when it will get better.

Grosber was sped up the whole game. I'll chalk it up as playing a top ranked opponent and he was over zealous. He needs to play with pace and patience and I think he will.

I agree on the bench. They've been subpar other the Williams effort at BU. But Williams can't follow that up by not scoring vs. UVA. We need points from him... and hopefully Houlihan can help soon.

It was nice to see Jung play. He'll get pushed around a lot, but his energy and shot blocking will help.

We really could use Icotivic real soon. We need another big who can actually score and draw a defender away from the paint.

RE: Virginia - NUGUY - Yesterday 09:46 PM

One positive thing I'll say about our defense is that the effort was definately there. I'm telling myself that team defense takes time. I also think that the over aggressive defensive play is an easy fix. I hope that's true because guys we need on the floor are being forced to the bench.
