With the subtractions of UCF, Houston, and Cincy...the AAC was at 8 teams. They should have added UAB only to go to 9 teams and waited.

A full merger with MWC would have been best for the individual schools. It would have looked like this...

East: Memphis, Tulane, USF, Temple, East Carolina, UAB, Navy
Central: Air Force, CSU, Wyoming, New Mexico, Utah St., SMU, Tulsa,
West: SDSU, San Jose St, Hawaii, Nevada, Fresno, Boise, UNLV.

That would have been a much better overall conference instead of adding to the bottom schools to AAC.

I still don't understand the schools we selected. The whole "metro" thing is flawed. I don't believe for a moment that ESPN picked them. I know they have done some boneheaded things lately but they are not that stupid. No that was the AAC's panicked idea when the MW schools said no. You would think there was one person in the room talking them off the cliff. UNCC...nooo you have to be kidding me.

Saying ‘I don’t believe it’ doesn’t change the facts.

Then show me where that happened. Show me were they selected those schools, promised not to renegotiate the contract and made that public.

I'm not doing your research for you. my info comes from Mike Aresco radio interviews and honestly I'm cool with sitting back and watching you slowly but surely realize that information is correct. Tell us more about paying 18 million and walking away from 54 million in exit fees to play in a lesser conf.

Anything to get out of the future AAC yes. Wait out any GOR but we have to get out of where we are.

we get more TV money than the MWC, better exposure than the MWC, and it costs 18 million to leave the AAC.

if you want to play MWC teams root for a merger. JMHO

The AAC was a pretty good conference before 3 of the best 4 announced their departure. I can’t imagine we’d get a decent media deal with the current cast of characters. It’s time to think outside the box. Not sure the best move, but I can’t believe it will be with C-USA 2.

Maybe just blow up the AAC. Take SMU, and a couple of others. Tulsa? Tulane? Navy? Seriously, there isn’t much worth taking.

We were better than the MWC by a long shot, but not any more. The additions are not helpful at all.

No one watches those games on the east coast.

Memphis in the MW would seal the coffin on recruiting our own area.

We're better off where we are than being the outlier school that nobody cares about.

Who watched the AAC without Cinci, UCF, and Houston. We lost three of the best football programs, and two of the best basketball programs. Seriously, with the new lineup, who is watching?

Six months ago all the negative nabobs were bitching about the AAC and how the Tigers had to get out now. 5yrs ago they were talking about the AAC then just as they talk about it now. A year from now they will still be finding some reason to catch pieces of the sky in their caps. The AAC will do better than they expect and so will the Tigers.

And no one in their markets care at all about any of these teams (except Memphis). You think South Florida is watching FAU? People in Charlotte don’t like Charlotte. Tulane? SMU? Hilarious.

TV markets that could care less about their teams don’t move the needle. Houston is an anomaly. I think they will watch more once they step up to the B12. But, in reality, they get completely overshadowed by UT and TA&M.

So if that group was ESPN's hand picked replacements why did the AAC reach out to MW schools first? Did ESPN call them up and tell them..no we want UNCC. I'm curious to how all that went down, did he cover all that in the interview? Did he mention getting it writing that ESPN would not renegotiate after the conference bell cows leave? If ESPN is convinced that commuter schools that are basically step children of their parent schools are going to be athletic powerhouses then they really don't understand college football. Nothing is stopping us from talking to the MW and waiting till we collect the exit fee's and our exit fee is much smaller. But we need to leave soon after UC, Houston and UCF leave. This conference going forward is far more Sunbelt than it is P6. The money will not be there in the future.

I’m not advocating a MWC move, but you have to believe we need to get out of the mess we’re in. The AAC has been gutted and there just aren’t any good replacements. The MWC has some teams with value. Air Force, Boise, SDSU…

But leave for the MWC? You pay an exit fee to get less tv revenue and be seen in fewer households, while abandoning your recruiting footprint. Pass.

That's not how you do it. You go to ESPN with a proposal. "If we and a few choice other teams leave the AAC and join the Mountain West, will you make it worth our while?"

Sure. ESPN says, "You want us to pay you more to be on fewer households in lesser markets and in the Mtn and Pac time zones? Whose idea was this, some message board fan?"

RE: We need to go ahead and call the Mountain West - Tiger87 - 08-01-2022 10:01 PM

It was accepted knowledge a few months back that the new AAC deal will have "dynamic pricing". Memphis will stand to make as much as anyone in the conference. Other legacy AAC schools may as well. But for sure, Memphis and SMU get the big slices. That is how ESPN keeps the deal whole - adding good markets of up and coming programs, and giving them a lower AAC share - but still more than they got in CUSA. And we still get more than the MWC pays. It's why Boise continues to renegotiate the highest MWC share. They are trying to keep pace.

Our fans seem to have forgotten all these discussions.

So the only MWC team in a top 20 TV market has only 30,000 TV viewers for their games.

The new AAC is still the top G5 conference and by large margin.

Or the PAC could dissolve. I'm suggesting we start to make moves for the future. The best conference left today is a combo of AAC and MW teams. All the schools left need to be proactive instead of waiting around for what the BIG and SEC may or may not do. Notice not one of the schools we added are on that list.

Talk merger then - or new conference. But not leaving the AAC for the MWC. It just makes no sense.

I think one thing Bowlsby did right, is dangle the "future expansion" carrot in front of us, SMU, Boise, Col State. It kept us from getting together initially and becoming as strong as the leftover B12 - such that it might have been enough to keep our departers from departing. Remember Boise and Col State were supposed to be coming over to the AAC shortly after UT and Okie announced leaving for the SEC. But then the B12 said they might add them later, so they decided to stay put.

Credit due - it was a smart move from a guy who made a few terrible moves.

Yea nothing stopping the leftover schools to be in discussions. Its not like it will stop anyone from going to the B12 if they call. Looks like the ACC may be held together by their GOR.

Is it possible? - Notre Dame and SMU to the ACC. Two private religious schools.
