Any insight as to why? Typically when you see this it's and indication that the school may have either pulled or possibly lowered the scholarship offer. Not saying that was done here but I have seen that with other schools. Could just be the player decided it was not a good fit.

Unlike most tweets of decommits in which no mention is made of the previous school, Drake went out of his way to thank the Rice coaching staff in his tweet. I hope it was about scholarship money and not him seeking a better opportunity....

...but, alas, he just tweeted his commitment to UT. Given the one-day turnaround (similar to David Shaw, who committed to UT one day after entering the portal).
Wonder if it was for better money-- both scholarship and NIL, the latter of which we simply cannot compete with UT. Regardless, we're starting to see a pattern of Pierce and his staff poaching us.

Maybe we should keep are commits confidential.

I believe Rice would’ve been a much better fit than UT IMO. Might have a shot after next season in the portal. However you make good point on NIL and a 25% scholarship goes further at a 25K school than at a 70K school for family Rice will need to get creative with NIL and aid other than Rice Investment if tuition keeps rising exponentially. I know, beating a dead horse again but I couldn’t help it!!!

I don't see the UT commitment tweet. One follow wants him to commit to UT . . . Maybe I'm just missing it.

Wouldn't the Rice staff have seen his grades and scores well into the process? Given the crazy state of college costs, suspect it's more about net costs. Esp if he has siblings. $24K less scholarship $ for a UH degree v. Rice $$. Who knows. Probably not fair to speculate. Anyway, best of luck to him.

Disturbing because he has had time with the new pitching coach if part of his reason was unhappiness with the prior one.

Good point. Getting tougher to recruit especially at the private schools for this very reason. Public schools are doing their best to catch up though. I wish him the best of luck as well.

M-O-N-E-Y.

If it costs $20,000/year more to attend Rice, many of these families simply cannot afford that, especially if he has siblings. That Rice degree kind of loses a lot of its significance when the upfront cost is that steep, particularly for someone who sees his career goal as professional baseball when at age 18.

Personal note. My family was not poor by any stretch. They had saved up enough for me to go to Rice (in the first class to pay tuition). When I got an NROTC scholarship that paid virtually everything (only the football players had a better deal), the money that they had saved for me sent my younger brother to Auburn.

All good points. Not to get too far off the rails of this thread but it begs the question, what is a Rice degree now worth in comparison to the good public universities ($/degree)? If a baseball players decision is first and foremost a quality education is Rice still their best option considering the cost? If kid believes its baseball or bust, why go to Rice and incur (or his family) that level of debt. If tuition continues to rise at the private institutions the cost absolutely will outweigh the benefit. The Rice Investment is a great program but I believe the $150,000 threshold for aid needs to be increased in proportion to tuition increases.

For those interested in recruiting, this Instagram post by a former UVA pitcher discusses an app purports to have compiled 20 years worth of data to give recruits an idea of how they stack up for various colleges. If I knew a high school player it seems like the kind of data they’d want. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CkHfwJMjkB1/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

I watched this interview (28 mins) with Walter Beede. Coach Janish was very informative with how he sees the current recruiting landscape (NIL, transfer portal) and the challenges that this has created for high academic schools like Rice. Class act and represents Rice well.
