Wow. I really thought they would at least try in the spring.
If college football is not played this fall, there will be a LOT of schools in deep, deep trouble financially.
The only silver lining to this may be that some schools are going to have no other option but to realign conferences to stay alive. Schools that entertained the option now may be more desperate and may have to move down or up. If there was talk of a new conference, I guarantee that talk is going to ramp up in a big, big way if football doesn't happen this season.
If there were ever a time to move up to FBS, it may happen very soon. I just wish it were under better circumstances.

Easier decision for Ivy's than many others......they have HUGE endowments to weather this and as far as football, they don't play in playoffs for titles anyway so meh.

Stanford's endowment is 27 billion yet they are cutting 11 sports (not huge sports). There are only 2 schools in the Ivy that are higher (Yale, Harvard). Princeton is pretty close to Stanford. The others range between 3 and 13 billion (2018 numbers).
It might not seem important now, but remember that the Ivy was the first to announce when it came to cancelling spring sports.

My guess is (and totally my guess) is that Stanford Athletic Department has been wanting to downsize and cut some of these Olympic Sports for sometime and this Covid Crisis gives them the cover to do so. I think this is what you will see with many athletic departments. They have wanted to get rid of some of these programs for years but did not want the backlash....now it can be done with zero backlash.

There may be some truth to that. Having spent quite a bit of time out in the Bay Area and interacting with Stanford engineering alums, I know they take a lot of pride in winning the Athletic Directors Cup for 25+ consecutive years. It is easy to see why they do, which is also why many scoff (correctly IMO) at that award. I mean, when you are finishing at or near the top nationally in so many sports that have so few actually competing in and you get points towards the Cup for it, then yeah you should win it every year. Of course, that was at least my point of view towards their bragging about it. 04-cheers

I will say though, the students in many of those sports are top notch academically and bring more to the table than their athletics prowess (generally speaking of course).

The ACC just announced all fall "Olympic" sports (read: non-football) will delay start of competition to "at least" September 1.

They don't know. Just pushing back the inevitable I think. In a few weeks, perhaps they'll announce to "at least" September 15 until eventually they'll just announce "canceling".

Yep, and the NFL cancelled the HOF game, and the first two pre-season games (that actually makes me happy 03-lmfao). And new covid 19 cases per day have never been higher.

Cancellations are picking up steam, because things are not improving.

Best case scenario, I don't see college basketball games happening until Jan 2021.

Vaccine is the obvious solution, but let's say they identify one late December, that will be available to everyone by March 31 - I could see sports on all levels saying, at this point let's just cancel team sports for 3-4 months until everyone is able to receive the vaccine.

RE: Tracking the return of JMU sports (no discussions of validity of covid pandemic) - boozeNammo - 07-09-2020 11:14 AM

If we do 'have' football this fall, its going to take one game that is identified as a hotspot for spread amongst players/personnel, and BLAM... season over.

I used to be 50/50 on this, but now hovering in the 5% range.

It isn't the size of the endowment, it's what you can (and can't) do with it. Most of a school's endowment dollars are tied to a specific college, department, etc. The athletic department can't just dip into endowment dollars set aside for Anthropology in order to pay for scholarships for Fencing.

It is also important to note that about half of the sports they cut are not NCAA sponsored and their Field Hockey team, though NCAA sponsored and successful, plays in the American East conference since there are only three (now two) Western FH teams in NCAA (UC Davis and Cal... who are also in the America East). While the regular season allowed the Western teams to play each other in a round robin style, they did need to fly to New Jersey this past year for the conference tournament. Don't about travel for NCAAT, but with so few options out West, you would have to assume travel for playoffs was almost guaranteed.

Thanks, I needed a laugh.

On the Stanford topic, they were fielding 36 teams, an absurdly high number. Cutting to 25 is no big deal. Although it does reduce the number of sports that they can get paid to bypass regular admissions standards for children of rich parents. I believe that crew was involved in the Lofflin case.

Nashville SC now joins Dallas FC as a 2nd team that is removed from the MLS is Back Tournament due to COVID positive testing. Maybe my DC United team will stay infection free and win by process of elimination.

04-cheers

(btw, with the Redskins nickname likely about to go, some have suggested Dan Snyder go World Footballer with the new nickname and just call it Washington FC...I think it should be Washington FU)

I think Snyder should change the logo to a redskin potato with a couple of feathers hanging off the back of it and keep the name.

I heard the Blue Devil fans were upset our basketball team is using the "Duke"s. I heard Alger is contemplating changing our name, since they feel it is offensive to them. 03-weeping

This is exactly why we need to be in a conference with Army, Navy and the Air Force. When snotty momma's boys from New Jersey at Rutgers-Durham start throwing threats at us, we just call on our conference brethren to bomb the hell out of them.

Just sayin'.

And the NFL was trying to cut 2 preseason games long ago, long before the current crisis.

Holy crap, there are still people peddling this nonsense? Wow, dude. Remember when we experienced an exponential increase in traffic fatalities due to the extremely communicable nature of...traffic?
