Can’t think of anything else. Computer formulas just tell part of the story.

It was also just one year. if that happened for a few successive years then there's something good brewing in the AAC

Cincinnati has more than held its own with the ACC for the past decade. Since 2011 we've beaten NC State, Virginia Tech (2-1 during that span), Duke, BC, Miami and of course our old Big East conference mates Louisville, Pitt and Syracuse (while still conference mates, they've not played us since). We did lose to UNC, of course that was when Tommy Tuberville was here stealing from the university.

I know Temple, UCF and USF have had some success as well.

It's about the FB
Being prop up by ESPN, should not count on the field

Not only how bad would the ACC MC have been without CLEMSON but how much higher would the AAC have finished in the MC without UCONN. However one thing nobody takes into consideration is how low most AAC teams are ranked at the start of every season no matter how well they finished the previous one no matter how many of their teams starters return. AND DON'T FORGET THAT LAST BASKETBALL SEASON THE AAC FINISHED 5TH OVER THE PAC12 ALSO. 07-coffee307-coffee3

NCSU over ECU, easy to remember. It was only one of the Pack's 4 wins in a dreadful season.

ECU's struggles are well documented but as recently as 2016, with a 33-30 victory over rival North Carolina State on September 9, 2016, ECU became the first "Non-Power" program to defeat a single "Power Conference" (vs. ACC) six-consecutive times from 2013–16, thereby breaking a four-way tie with TCU (vs. BIG XII), Boise State (vs. PAC-12), and BYU (vs. PAC-12) all of which each had previously established five-game winning streaks against a single "Power Conference." ECU defeated regional rivals Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and North Carolina State two-consecutive times each respectively during the Pirates' six-game winning streak against the ACC.

Consistently, year in and year out, top to bottom, AAC = ACC - Clemson. This year was just the 1st year where AAC > ACC (even including Clemson).

Yes, we can hem and haw about who would have finished where with or without great teams or albatross teams. But bottom line is the AAC did finish ahead of the ACC, and that is something.

A classy post from H-Mark. And I agree fully.

Since Massey is a composite, it's only as good as its components, and I know that one of those is the Colley Matrix, so Massey isn't the be-all, end-all. Sagarin is also not a be-all, end all, but is at least decently respected -- it has the ACC rated pretty low for 2019, as befits their performance, but still comfortably above the AAC:

SEC: 80.22
Big 12: 79.33
Big Ten: 78.14
Pac-12: 76.26
ACC: 72.04
American: 69.04
MWC: 65.01
Sun Belt: 61.26
MAC: 57.84
CUSA: 57.39

Congratulations...
This is not exactly new for American programs that were in The Big East.
The Big East regularly finished ahead of The ACC.

Again congratulations...

Sagarin often has some silly results. The point of the composite is that the weird results get offset by more reasonable ones.

Even Scotty Mo was undefeated vs UNC & NCSU (2-0) during his much maligned tenure at ECU. ECU has outscored UNC 166-91 over the last 3 games, including another blow out in one of our worst seasons ever (2018). Ya'll should be trying to play us right now since the Mack is back and we're down and out but ya'll will wait until coach Houston has us up and rolling again before we're back on the schedule. Makes no sense.

RE: American Athletic finishes ahead of ACC in Massey Composite - JHS55 - 01-21-2020 08:47 PM

The ACC was built by ESPN, and it’s not working, ESPN is paying so much more money for nothing much in return
Pac-12 is sinking under the waves and will continue to be a really bad autonomous conference to be paying big money
ACC is also a bad autonomous conference losing on all fronts, soon these two conferences will lose the big tv payouts

Meanwhile the AAC is the real deal and fans know it, fan support within the AAC has been on a steady rise sense day one
AAC simply fields a better product with a lot less money that fans want to watch, nobody wants to watch teams in the pac or the ACC play each other, so many loser teams that make huge money with nothing to show for it

I'm not thrilled with Sagarin either, since it's proprietary, but it is accessible.

I'll use it a lot for things like strength of schedule. It is, as you say, accessible.

Rutgers and UConn followed the same strategy, with Rutgers successfully getting into the Big Ten, UConn however did not. The thing that distinguishes them from American schools is that they are flagships.

The American will likely see the same pressures in coming years as the MWC already experienced. Boise State has reigned in it's budget growth such that they have the lowest institutional transfer % by a wide margin in G5 (it's a model that should be followed by almost every G5 school, staying within your means, being disciplined in spending, demanding bang for the buck from your programs and working the fan base). USF and ECU seem to have opted for this direction, and neither Tulane nor Tulsa feel compelled to spend to the moon to keep up with the power schools. UCF, Houston, Memphis and Cincy are spending like no tomorrow. My WAG is this will show up in the performances --and to some extent it already has-- in the next half dozen years. They are spending to keep in the B12 replacement school race.

Tulane has been spending at AAC averages. 12-12 AAC mark in the past 3 years suggests as much.

Most AAC programs have eerily similar budget sizes.

Yeah, the AAC is the real deal, even though it's a geographically disparate mishmash of ambitious schools with little connection to one another and any member would leave the others behind in a split second on the off chance an actual power conference were to come calling.
