Since he probably makes a couple mil a year I’m not sure he would be fine with leaving. Sure a P5 is attractive but if you have a good thing going with a sizable salary I think the smart move is ride it out. P5 teams are really cut throat and you could be gone in a couple years and be a unattractive hire. Plus LU gave him a chance when other teams turned their backs on him. I’m not sure about other folks but I would remember that forever and know who has my back when things go south.....not many people.

I think this is a valid take. Freeze can be "the man" here with less stress than at a P5, but there is a trade off that he won't compete for a national championship here. Is that something he's willing to give up? That's up to him to make that decision. I think he'll be gone sooner than later but I also think he'll only leave for a school that will fully support him, warts and all, as there will still be a large negative backlash to whoever hires him.

I think we might be in luck due to Covid. I doubt there are a lot of openings that would gamble on him. The one that worries me is South Carolina. They are desperate and I doubt he’d say no to them. Vandy probably wouldn’t want that image for the program. FSU would be a absolutely perfect match for him. He’d walk into a place with a ton of talent and would essentially only have to get by Clemson to make the playoffs. That is who I’d be really worried about.

FSU would be likely next year.

FSU is still paying taggarts paychecks. Unless the new coach is a disaster he will get 3 seasons. I suspect though the offensive coordinator will get replaced.

It will take 3 or 4 solid winning seasons at liberty with freeze keeping his nose clean before someone takes him.

Probably at least that. But he is one of the highest paid coaches in all the G5 and a couple more contract negotiations would put him in P5 territory. I think that is something LU is willing to do after he shows a few seasons of proven success. If that happens then why leave? A NC isn’t a reason because most P5’s will never see a NC in his lifetime. He would leave behind something good and stable for a P5 that would cut him in 2-3 seasons if it doesn’t pan out.

LU needs to think about paying him P5 level money. The results are here and the recruiting continues to improve. The program is rising fast.

He will need a landing spot where he can win a NC. VT maybe. He does not fit the um culture at all. The others do not worry me if LU pays HF good money.

I'm think he fits the SEC, ACC (most schools), and Big 12. He seems like a good match for southern schools.

I’m sure LU will redo his contract soon and give him P5 type money. It would be silly for this topic to have not been addressed by the Administration already.

I think there are a few things at play here beyond just money, though we definitely need to pay this man & McKay the money they deserve:

1) Freeze seems to be happy being in a place with his family all together. Until his youngest daughter is in her senior year or graduates from Liberty, it sounds like he may not be looking except for a few specific opportunities.

2) It sounds like only specific opportunities would draw him away, rather than any old job at a higher level.

3) The way he's talking about that win against VTech, he sounds all in for now.

4) If he were to want to go back to the SEC, he & the school that wants him will have to jump through a number of hoops so long as Sankey is around. That may not be worth it to him or the school(s) he wants to go to for now.

By no means do I expect him to stay put forever, but I think we'll have him longer than the first P5 to call him up. It sounds like his priorities have changed, & he feels at home here for now. We shouldn't hold our breath hoping he doesn't leave in the near future, but we also shouldn't fear every time his name is highly tied to a P5 school that's interested.

So who is in the driver's seat now at LU, other than the AD, who has the ability to significantly increase HF contract? Jr. did strongly support LU sports development and gave the green light for sports expansion. Besides the LU AD, who else has an impact voice and the ability to say give the HC a new contract? It could be millions of dollars of an investment.

Personal guess... AD makes a plan and the President and board determine approval.

“I have one of the greatest jobs, I think, up and coming, in America right now,” Freeze said on the Stingray Show Monday. “We’re at peace here. We’re already competing with Power Five schools in year two. I’ve already had a couple of phone calls from different places, even last year, I declined everything that came my way. I’m so happy here. So is my wife. So are my kids. I love these kids and this staff here at Liberty.”

RE: Head Coach Hugh Freeze - Curtisc83 - 11-09-2020 07:40 PM

When things were bad everyone turned their backs on him. He couldn’t even get a assistant coach job. I like any man would remember that. When things are good everything is fine with smiles and handshakes but when it goes south his real friends showed up....not many. 2 mil a year is better than most of the G5 and some P5’s he will get a raise and be in the lower P5 realm. But I don’t think it’s about money and if it was then he’s coaching for the wrong reasons.

RE: Head Coach Hugh Freeze - farmfanucdgrad - 11-11-2020 01:54 PM

Looks like Liberty and HF have another contract agreement making him one of the top 5 paid G-5 coaches a year.

Yeah that’s great! I wonder if that would keep some P5’s away. The cost to pay him out wouldn’t be small.

3+ million a year. That should keep away someone like Vandy. I imagine the buyout went way up too. If that’s the case it might keep someone like SC out due to the buyout for their coach. SC and TN are paying 4.5 mil a year right now. Vandy is paying 3.5 mil.

RE: Head Coach Hugh Freeze - GE and MTS - 11-11-2020 03:37 PM

This is great news and likely keeps him here through next year.

I think Tennessee and Auburn could find enough money to get almost anyone they want. COVID-19 has really hurt the budgets for everyone so even they may be reluctant to spend too much money. South Carolina may feel desperate to not only catch up to the rest of their conference but also Clemson. I don't know that Tennessee is southern enough for Freeze. He's a deep south kind of guy.

I think Tennessee would be a good one and hard for him to pass on. SC will probably be more likely to get Chadwell from CCU due to cost. I could see them swing for Freeze but they’ve got a rockstar in their backyard that would cost wayyyyyy less money. Next year could get interesting with Auburn, FSU, VT and NCSU all being potential spots. I’ve said for a while FSU would be really a great fit for both.

I agree that Freeze would fit in well at Florida State. I just don't see them firing Norvell after two years, his first being effected by a pandemic. He has a real mess to clean up there and FSU would lose more credibility if they fired two coaches back to back after two seasons. I also don't think he would be poached after next year unless he really overachieved (NY6 bowl).
