The American Athletic Conference has announced that the women’s basketball conference game featuring SMU at Wichita State on Dec. 23 at 1 p.m. (ET)/12 p.m. (CT) on ESPN+ been postponed due to COVID-19 related issues within the Wichita State program.

Just declare Wichita State the winner. SMU women are going for a perfect season. Whatever it takes to get rid of that clown!

Houston, UCF, and USF look like tourney teams. Couple others have the sort of schedule that might get them consideration if they win the right ones and don't lose the wrong ones. I'd say half the league looks post season capable in a normal year (the women's NIT is huge). Bad year to be down, no UConn means everyone is bringing their A game every week because someone else is going to win the conference. Houston seems to finally be performing up to expectations after a bit of a plateau, Cincy appears a lil down from last year. Tulsa two games in looks like they might be pretty good and the Florida schools look good as always lately. Fun conference right now, hope they can bring it through the whole crazy season and get to make some noise in March.

Still think the guys get more bids, maybe not more post season teams though. Next year could be a really big one as WSU and Cincy will be through there rebuilds with three or four years since coaching changes. Tulane is relatively young and has had some success in the past looking decent this year. Plus the current top 3 should stay relatively stable performers.

Talking about women’s basketball

Is that even allowed here?

I should report myself for bringing it up.

‼️BREAKING: Penny Hardaway signs a 5-yr extension with Memphis worth $12.25M. Goes through April 2026.

LMAO. Are they being serious?

Of course. Do you have any clue the shape Memphis was in with its donors and fan base after Tubby's 2 years? FedExForum was empty, and donations were at historic lows.

Penny sure as hell rejuvenated Memphis basketball from basically its death bed, and started recruiting a lot of talent.

Now he needs to figure out how to coach it, but he sure as hell rejuvenated the program from where it was, and where it was further heading.

He had a 3 year contract, to start. Now is sure as hell not the time to fire him. But he needs to get it done on this extension.

As we were recently reminded on a certain streaming show “talent without training is nothing.” I hope Memphis is successful but I don’t think Penny can coach at this level. Penny may have increased donations and ticket sales, but will those still be there in a year or two if he doesn’t start competing at a higher level?

We'll see, but you're missing the point. His contract was up. Two choices. Fire him now, or renew him. What would you have done?

The number of years is irrelevant, as are the salary and the buyout clause, as that's all up to the boosters. School isn't paying but its standard small portion, limited by state law.

No brainer decision. I'd say he has 2-3 more years, at least. He bought a lot of patience and good will by turning around the fan base and donations so quickly, and recruiting so well. Now he has to learn how to get the players to execute.

Either he will or not, and if not, that patience will eventually be gone. But not close yet.

Pretty good writeup, but I believe that Murphy's final shot was blocked by D.J. Jeffries, not Cisse.

Enjoyed the article. Disagree that Memphis is in the top half of the conference with only wins over Tulane (who will likely finish last) & USF, missing Yetna at Memphis after USF blew a double-digit lead. Memphis seems aimless, playing so many guys it disrupts momentum & game flow, consistently too many TOs, players struggling to find a role & the coach being slow to make needed changes to gain consistency to win with regularity.

I had some worry about Houston after the Tulsa game, but they put that to rest last night. Big win especially without Caleb mills. https://cbbreview.com/2021/01/04/houston-basketball-defeats-smu-three-takeaways/

almost every team goes through a funk. houston's started with ucf and hopefully lasted through the half of the smu game. i hope lessons were learned as i would like no more of it going forward.

Anyone have the skinny on Mills?

RE: *** Basketball News Thread (Part 4) *** - invisiblehand - 01-05-2021 10:15 PM

This is the epitome of cougar tears. So upset that he can’t beat Tulsa that he literally needs to find another team.

All I know is he has been in contact with all the NC ACC schools, so maybe the homesick thing is legit.
