Haith ... did you confuse Loyola Chicago and Loyola Marymount? This isn't a good home and home to get.

There maybe a recruiting angle we do not see, but otherwise it is a puzzlingly arrangement for an AAC school.

Is it really a bad series though? My issue would be if that is one of his 3-4 signature games of the non-conference. If it is a filler game, Loyola Marymount seems as good as anyone. Everyone knows Loyola Marymount thanks to Paul Westhead, Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers.

playing Marymount isnt the issue, its that its a home an home... this is a buy game for most of the aac
Marymount is actually projected to be a top 100 team next season.. its a sad indication that this is the level of teams we are doing home and home with (that isnt some rivalry)

imagine Oklahoma scheduling a home and home with la tech....la tech is a great mid major but still not a great look...

this doesnt look great, i can get over that.. no one will care about this next week...

what's troubling to me is teams only do a certain amount of home and homes each year, if they are using 1 on Marymount this is an early indication Tulsa will have a terrible schedule ...
if they are doing home and home with Marymount they likely dont have a stash of touted games, and doing what they can to get good games.. if marymount is a home and home, what is going to be the level of the buy games ...

tulsa also isnt in a mte yet when 80% of high majors are already in MTEs.. theres enough good teams left to maybe make 2 more great MTEs.. if tulsa isnt in one of those, pairing up with a leftover big 10 team and picking up 2 other scrubs is their best bet for atleast a rewarding mte

Don't expect anything from us. Haith is trying to schedule to save his job. You heard his comments after the tourney. Because of our last AD he rightfully believed he could coast on a record built of crap. Essentially next year cost us nothing if we fire him, he is trying to get a 20 win season so he gets a real extension (off the schedule that won't happen even at 25 games) or looks like a good pick up who got an unreasonable fanbase who turned on him.

There are zero signs he will do anything to excite fans, test his team, make the changes necessary to be truly successful, or figure out how to be a coach for one more year at Tulsa. Our AD made sure that when he gets real power this fall Haith can be dealt with as cheaply as possible since he hung on by circumstances this last year. I was told given the situations from covid, the money, the president/AD changes, out right terrible timing, etc that this was the best outcome with the least outright negative effects. I was also told this was going to hurt no matter what we did so they made the best bad choice they had. Haith also had engendered some good will from some previous behind the scenes stuff.

I can not confirm this part, but I was told by someone else Monty also is in a similar position. With him having a "winning" season, the short ranking time, and Zaven being a top 20 draft pick, Tulsa is in a he wins and leaves for the best spot he can find or Monty loses, TU fires him half way through the season, give interim job to our DC, and see what we can do. While Monty was apparently quite an ass behind the scenes he did take a hit for us and has been made whole from it since, Zaven saved his job and we don't have another of those just lying around. This is not from the same source I trust who I asked about Haith after it was announced he would remain, but a couple people who would know stuff have said the same basic story.

Those Loyola Marymount teams with the insane offense were probably the most fun teams to watch in CBB history. Their nationally televised game against LSU, featuring Shaq as a freshman, was one of the greatest games I've ever seen, and one of the VERY few games I'll watch a replay of; it comes up on the SEC Network once in a while.

(LSU won 148-141 in OT. It was 134-134 at the end of regulation.)

We’ll most likely see L/M at the Jacksonville tourney so, obviously, they are on the short list fir AAC coaches in hot water.

winnable game for Tulane

RE: *** Basketball News Thread (Part 4) *** - SadderBudweiser - 05-19-2021 06:49 AM

Time to tune up the Jank Excuse generator!

Yor Anei’s move into the transfer portal has changed what looked like a fairly balanced and deep SMU roster into a guard-heavy team that will enter the season with many new faces. Some are prove but some are huge question marks. Scoring should not be an issue but rebounding may prove to be difficult.

For starters, a four guard rotation of Kendrick Davis (5’10”), Zach Nutall (6 ‘2”), Michael Weathers (6’3”) and Emmanuel Bandoumel (6’4”) has a proven scoring average that totals out at 69 points per game. Nutall was the Southland Conference POY and torched SMU at Moody for 36 points…so we know he can shoot at home!
Weathers was the leading scorer and SWAC newcomer of the year for Texas Southern.
Behind them come two highly touted freshmen recruits: Zhuric Phelps (6’2”) and Jalen Smith (6’4”) Both are three stars but Phelps has been rising in the rankings based on this past season’s Texas State High School Championship run. Smith is coming off two broken wrists suffered early last season. Both are reportedly very strong defensively. Phelps is being touted as the PG who will follow Davis.

Given the team’s perceived weakness on the larger end of the roster I’m guessing Bandoumel starts at the three spot and that SMU operates with three guards almost full time. They’ll need his defense and rebounding because so many questions in both health and ability remain to be answered.

Marcus Weathers (15.3/7.5) looks like the undisputed (an under-sized at 6’5”) starter at the 4 spot. Like his twin brother he is a sixth year senior and will be 24 years old when the season begins. He is a two time All A-10 transfer from Duquense (My guess is that SMU will be the oldest team in the conference)

The Serbian Sniper Stefan Todorovic (6’8”) comes in as the most highly ranked recruit on the roster, a four star #102 overall prospect. He’s a deadly shooter but he’s rail thin and slow defensively…..seems to be more of a three than a four and could end up sharing time at three with Bandoumel.

Tristan Clark, (6’10” 245) the Baylor transfer holds the key to SMU’s season and is the reason Anei’s departure is so significant. Will Clark ever be close to the 14.6/6.3/2.4 star he was before his knees gave out or will he be the 4.0/2.4 guy he was last year after re-habbing them? He actually retired after last season but recently announced his comeback. Jank jumped on him right away and with Anei and Isiah Jasey returning it was a reasonable gamble. If he cant go then we are stuck with Jasey again.

Jasey: Can’t make a friggin layup. The 6’11” big is a 10 minute per game backup at best. He runs the floor well but that’s about it.

Jahmar Young Jr. 6’9”) has also been on the roster for about 100 years. Originally a walk-on he has improved steadily and actually showed some rebounding ability in short stretches last season. I’d love to see him move past Jasey on the depth chart. I think he is ready to contribute on a regular basis.
Franklin Agunanne is a 6’9” 245 pound Loyola Chicago transfer who has seen little playing time there and is coming off a thumb injury. He averaged 2.3/1.8 off the bench last year….yawn. Again…his role becomes more important with Anei’s departure.

Rounding out the roster is this year’s addition to Jank’s trash bin….recruits who never should have been offered. (See: CJ White, William Douglas, Everett Ray, Elijah Landrum) This year that would be Darius MacBride, a guard who had virtually no offers out of high school, red-shirted and then sat out a second year due to a car accident. He probably never sees the floor in a conference game.

A walk-on of note is 6’4” shooting guard Tyler Lundblade. He’a a tough kid whose dad played for SMU back in the day who can shoot and isn’t afraid to mix it up. He is a lower 3-star who wasn’t getting much offer-wise and it seems like a good gamble on Jank’s part.

WITH Anei this looked like a team capable of playing in the AAC semis and getting an NCAA bid. Without Anei they’ll be fun to watch but probably a high mid-pack AAC team. We're currently short two at least two knees, two wrists and a thumb. Given his scoring ability inside two feet Jasey my have an eyesight problem as well.

One interesting note is that SMU’s OOC schedule is dramatically improved this season. I’m not sure that the AD has actually informed Jank of this fact. He’s gonna soil his undies when he finds out.

not the greatest mte but by far, huge gap, better than anything ecu has had since joining the aac

i dont think ecu will do very well in the tournament and likely wont meet the top end teams (oklahoma) ... but now every team in the aac but tulsa is officially inked to "potentially" play atleast 1 major noncon if they do well in there tourney

its early, and a lot of room left to disappoint, but it is shapiing up to be the best scheduled aac noncon with the current members

RE: *** Basketball News Thread (Part 4) *** - mustangxc - 05-19-2021 11:27 AM

ECU now in a solid pre-season tournament. Tulsa is the lone team on the sidelines.

I really wish SMU had landed in this tournament. How did no AAC school make it into this solid field?

This would have been a perfect tourney for UCF.

Other teams in the field include Stanford, Vandy, BYU, Hawaii, Liberty, Wyoming and Northern Iowa.

Now if only CBG can put an Offensive First team on the court, I'd be a happy man. 04-rock

I don't know what you're talking about - the team we put on the court was incredibly offensive last year!
