Agree. 8 boards and 5 assists last night. He shows up on the stat sheet and contributes in multiple ways. I love guys like that.

That makes at least two of us. I got nothing against Ted at all, and he is a great supporter of ODU athletics.

Hate seems a bit overboard to me but he does bug me sometimes when he seems to be cheering for the other team making a big play. My biggest complaint, however, is that he forgets to mention the time during basketball games. If you are just listening on the radio you want to know if there is 5 or 10 minutes (whatever) left in the game. That said, he is pretty clever, as noted a big ODU fan, and he and Dave have a repartee that they could take on the road as a comedy act. Doug Ripley is the best play-by-play man to me but Ted A. is certainly entertaining.

Here's a couple of thoughts for you round ball guys to chew on for me.

1. Our two seven footers are strong and athletic, but I would just as soon see them stick to dunks when it comes to offense. Their shooting otherwise is just not accurate enough.

2. This is the most offensive talent I have seen the Monarchs put on the floor at one time in a long, long time. We have shooters!

3. Stith, Caver, Green, Godwin, Wade -- does anyone in C-USA have a better fivesome?

4. I think this is rapidly becoming a really good team with potential for significant post season play.

I wouldn't group Dickens and Robinson together. Their skillsets are very different.

By the way, they defended the pick and roll awesome last night. Think that was a pretty big factor in this blowout. Very few easy buckets at the rim for them.

1. Dickens actually has a pretty good shot.

2. If Godwin and Green hit shots, this will be the best offensive team we have seen in a while.

3. WKU is probably more talented with Bearden, Hollingsworth, Murray, Bassey, Anderson.

4. This is a team that can get better every game and make a run through the conference tournament. Kenpom says that this is the second best defensive team ODU has had in 18 years (2010 being the only year that was better at #10). Kenpom has this year's team rated has the #21 defensive team in the country.

Agree with all of this. Robinson has a decent baby hook (siri, lol) but he really just doesn’t have a ton of offense of skills. Dickens doesn’t have a ton of skill and the low post yet but he has a nice shot. Dickens is a monster defensively though

Western Kentucky is still more talented than we are Western Kentucky is still more talented than we are. But if Green continues to improve offensely and Godwin shoots like you did last night they are going to have some trouble with us.

We are settling into a rotation of Less Robinson and Carver.

RE: ODU vs bill/mary - jumpshooter - 12-06-2018 09:18 AM

I thought the postgame show last night was one of the most informative I've heard in a while. Dave noted that at practice the other day -- after Godwin went 1 for 8 against JMU -- Godwin had the ball 28 feet from the basket. Jones stopped practice right there, told Godwin "You've got to be ready to shoot. You can shoot it from there. Be ready." 28 feet, not a distance a lot of coaches would give a kid a green light from. Godwin said moments like that are an obvious boost to his confidence, and Jones said there were 3 or 4 shots last night when MG was ready to shoot, no hesitation, and it paid off.

DT also asked Jones how he became such a stickler for defense. The answer was that he wasn't against offense but "I just like to win, and I think you can control the possibility of that better on defense."

We've got a lot of potential with this crew, especially if we can find a 3rd scorer per game, whether it's Green, Godwin or Wade. And I don't know what Kithcart's injury is, but I can't wait to see him inserted on the floor as well.

I live only a mile away, but I am old and drive the games. If I time my exit right, the coach's interview is starting just as I pull out of the parking garage and is complete just as I arrive home.

I actually heard two separate answers from JJ in response to DT's line of questions. His first attempt at an answer sounded more to me like an outright denial that he is a defense-first coach - - and that it was just the rosters of the teams that he's had that have given that impression.

DT either didn't hear that answer or wasn't buying it, because he then asked what in JJ's background caused him to be so singularly focused on defense (assuming an answer to the first question that JJ had not given). Instead of sticking to his prior response, JJ then went into a fairly meaningless (I thought) discussion of defense giving you more control over winning games.

Not that it much matters, but I thought that JJ's initial answer was the more honest one: that he doesn't view himself as a defense-first coach. He is just working with the ingredients that he has.

Agree. This has been a nice streak. In years past we would have lost this one. Our defense is incredible right now. I still have concerns about the offense being good enough to beat the best teams in CUSA, but there is some time to get that worked out. Overall this has been a solid start to the season. The loss to NI stands out as the only one that doesn't feel great. Probably should have beaten St Joe too, but that was a road game against a decent team in a tough place to play.

I had a totally different take on the interview. I thought his original answer to DT was intended to say that he didn't feel that the defensive part of the game was more important than offense.

I thought his explanation about why he focuses so much on defense was solid. His take is that the defensive part of the game is where a coach can make the biggest impact on a player once they are in the system. He commented that the offensive portion has to be handled during recruiting. A player either has the skills and mindset to put the ball in the basket or he doesn't and there isn't much a coach can do to change that other than minor tweaks. However, on the defensive end a coach can teach technique, concepts and a defensive focus and make a much bigger impact.

Watch your mouth, lest ODU loses to UTSA and everything falls apart again.

That wouldn't surprise me in the least. Not only can UTSA light up the scoreboard, but those second games on Texas road trips can be a killer.

Dont let this distract you from the fact that Adrian Peterson was the only running back in NFL history score a 90 yard TD on a single play, and NOT reach 100 yards for the entire game.

Dammit, you distracted me from the fact that Golden State blew a 3-1 lead against Cleveland in the NBA Finals. Now I may never remember it.

Also in fairness, it was a lot harder to go undefeated against those three from 1996 to 2012, since ODU had to play them a combined six times in the regular season, plus potentially again in the CAA tournament. Like the season the Monarchs won the CAA and beat Notre Dame in the NCAAs — they went 7-1 against the trio, a perfect record spoiled by a loss at VCU.

I was more suprised Blaine hadn't done it. W&M and JMU were hot garbage for most of his tenure. But yeah, VCU of old, the CAA tourney and the amount of games it would have required makes it a much taller mountain to climb.
