Quote:If WMU decided to hire a new coach they would need to double that salary to get who they want IMO.

I don't agree, but lets assume you're right. We don't need to worry about it, because money doesn't exist in the budget to do that. Mainly due to the fact that continueing losing has reduced crowd size at Lawson and therefore revenue.

We're into the Death Spiral of an athletic program-you keep on losing so the cash flow drops off, then you lack sufficient wherewithall to hire someone new to turn things around. Extended losing is the best job security you can have as Head Coach at a mid-Major! That's why this never should have been allowed to go on for 9 years. But, what the hell?

rick comley makes $150k. i'd have to imagine that's the upper echelon of the ccha along with red. i'd love to know what blasi makes and what scott paluch makes. i'd have to imagine that paluch makes less than culhane with bg paying gregg brandon $150k per year.

this isn't for hockey salaries but i found it interesting enough. it's a list of all the 1A football salaries, and there are some interesting listings for the mac schools:

http://www.collegesportsreport.com/Archives_Pages/Coaching_Changes/DIACoachesComp.htm

85 Toledo Tom Amstutz $376,400 MAC

93 Northern Illinois Joe Novak $332,800 MAC

96 Western Michigan Bill Cubit $266,000 MAC
97 Ohio Frank Solich $262,172 MAC

102 Central Michigan Butch Jones $220,000 MAC
103 Akron J.D. Brookhart $207,500 MAC

106 Buffalo Turner Gill $183,000 MAC
107 Kent State Doug Martin $170,000 MAC
108 Ball State Brady Hoke $159,220 MAC
109 Eastern Michigan Jeff Genyk $154,442 MAC
110 Bowling Green Gregg Brandon $150,000 MAC
111 Miami-Ohio Shane Montgomery $139,500 MAC

112 Louisiana-Monroe Charlie Weatherbie $130,000 SUN (least reported paid)

look at shane montgomery. is this how the cradle of coaches treats its own? geez. never thought toledo would be the top and miami would be the bottom.

I remember beating BGSU in triple overtime one year.

1985 - BG was #1 in the country I think...Best damn hockey game I ever saw....could be the most exciting sporting event I ever saw...Glenn Healy stopping 60 of 63 BGSU shots - many on 2 man down situations.

I was at the Joe that day, and I agree.

Now that I think a bit more, it might have been 84.....anyway - about 500 WMU fans - a few thousand BG fans - the MSU and OSU(?) fans started filling the JLA - since the game finished well after the start time of game 2 - the crowd was with the underdog Broncos - Healy was on his ear all night!

Champ game against MSU - first time WMU was shut out all year, Dan Dorion kept off the scoresheet for the first time as well....great weekend of hockey....

RE: Culhane extended through 2011 - DesertBronco - 11-13-2007 05:13 PM

Spring of 85, yep, Dorion was shut out, and we didn't have any gas in our tank after that OT win against the York boys. Next year was a different story.

Yes - As I recall we lost to OSU at home......Healy's SR year. The following year 86 - Bill Horn was the keeper when WMU won. My memory has 84 beat BG at JLA 3ot - 85 lost OSU home - 86 won CCHA -

RE: Culhane extended through 2011 - DesertBronco - 11-14-2007 10:51 AM

You're right, I was a year off...

March 10, 1984 Michigan State 3 Ron Mason Western Michigan 5 Bill Wilkinson 5-0 4-0

It was a fun time to be a Bronco hockey fan. When Dorion, Thrun and Gagne were on the ice - (and I should add Crossman as well - not for the finesse but for knocking skulls....) it was a thing of beauty!!

I never saw them play, but looking at their stats, that was a crazy offense.

RE: Culhane extended through 2011 - DesertBronco - 11-14-2007 05:24 PM

Yessir! It was fun to be a hockey fan back then.

RE: Culhane extended through 2011 - BroncoPhilly - 11-15-2007 01:48 AM

Those were the Salad Days for Bronco Hockey! We played exciting upbeat hockey and always gave the big boys a run for their money. I agree the triple OT win over BGSU was one for the ages. I attended that game with my father. He wasn't a big hockey fan but even he was impressed with the win.

The winning goal, as I recall (faded memory of an old fart here) was a set up shot where two Bronco players placed themselves on either side of the goal, deeked out the goalie with an across the goalmouth pass and torqued it in. In the last few minutes both teams had excellent chances to put in the winner but both goalies were simply outstanding in their saves! And you're right, fans from the following game stood and applauded the Bronco winning goal for about 2 solid minutes after it was scored-and justifiably so.02-13-banana

Yes it was -their stickhandling/passing was great to watch - excitement every shift.....

Dorion and Gagne got screwed - either one of them should have won a Hobey(sp) - damn east coast bias......

Passing especially, remember Chris Macdonald (sp?) on the power play? He hit TAPE each pass (it seemed), just crisp and great passing.

Yes - MacDonald was pretty special as well. IIRC, he wore the C for 3 straight years..

RE: Culhane extended through 2011 - Indiana Bronco - 11-17-2007 04:38 AM

i could write a book on my complete thoughts of the jim culhane era at wmu. in a nutshell, 00-01 and 01-02 were culhane's defining moments of his career. he still had half of wilkinson's gritty, defensive minded and overlooked players (gove, bishai), offensive masterminds, defensives stalwarts and overall, solid hockey players, in tow. he had a hockey team in the first half of 00 that was literally unstoppable. a more than reliable power play, a potent offensive display and the same wilki influenced defense that produced joe corvo.

and it didn't work out. fast forward to 02. the fukking ohio state buckeyes win only four road games during the regular season (two in kzoo). they come limping into the playoffs as the broncos come in FOURTH (!!!!!!!!) in the ccha to claim home ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs. ohio state including waste of flesh dave steckel comes in and makes quick work of the broncos.

from there on, it's been a crap shoot. the first year we see a promising finish to a season in a long time, a ****** fairbanks team tops the broncs. when wmu limps into a 04 first round showdown with the irish, the go to the final overtime to settle the series and fall short.

my current pipe dream is that KB would find the missing money to hire wilkinson as a consultant, but considering the current state of fiscal policy in our state government, i'm not sure if that would ever happen, nor would i reasonably want it to.

the perils of being a bronco hockey fan.

Broncos lose once again, to ND. You still predicting a 20 win season Petit???? 03-banghead

RE: Culhane extended through 2011 - bronconick - 11-17-2007 02:25 PM

I'm hard pressed to get to 10 wins on this schedule.

Probably can sweep Wayne State
one of 4 vs. Ferris State
one against Alaska in Alaska
one against 2-8-1 OSU next weekend.
one in the Vermont cup thing (Quinnipiac then Holy Cross/Vermont)

That's 9 wins on the season. Probably upset Michigan or MSU to get the 10th.

RE: Culhane extended through 2011 - BroncoPhilly - 11-17-2007 05:04 PM

Won't even be able to make the playoffs to lose in the first round-our usual gambit.

Kathy totally mishandled this contract extension. She's done some correct things, but this is a boneheaded one IMO.
