Pep Band / Student Section
I thought a positive that came out of the game tonight was a larger, peppier and well organized pep band / student section. I hope it becomes contagious! Loved the spirit from the group.

We are have to rely on the students this year to come to the games and make noise. Ad needs to figuure how to make that happen.

The house was still to quiet for a crowd.

LOL. As if free tickets weren't enough?

Students will only go if the team is doing well and playing good teams at the Ted.

Let's hope we can keep the student's interest. I thought the student section was great.

I saw somewhere (ODUsports.com, I think) that they decided to let any student in with an ID regardless of having reserved a ticket. I think it would be smart to continue this policy indefinitely for basketball.

The tickets aren't free. Maybe ODU should inform each student how much they pay towards their tuition to fund the athletic program. This would insure they know why they aren't charged when claiming tickets. Additionally, if they all knew their share of the costs for athletics, perhaps they would be more likely to show up.

You must be kidding. These kids could care less how much of their parents (or the government's money) they are spending.

As a current student who has paid his way throughout his time at ODU, no I'm not kidding. Many of our students (compared to peer colleges) work their way through college. If informed of this sunk cost, they will want to get more out of that exchange. Further, it would only take a small amount of time during orientation to teach these kids about student fees. It's definitely better than what they are currently doing.

Trust me, the university would find a way to mask that fee somehow. It just happens to be under the label of an athletic fee.

And I applaud your efforts in paying your way. I did the same (with the assistance of student loans). However, I'm willing to bet we are in the vast minority. Most kids I knew during my time there got by with a lot of parental assistance. Sure, they may have a job while in school, but it wasn't to pay tuition.

It appeared that they were allowing the students to use their meal plan to eat at the stadium. I haven't noticed this before, but based on the oddly large turn out and no other apparent contributing factors aside from the ticket thing it seems as though they may be on to something.

My main motivation to attend Basketball games at the Scope in my day as a student was that I helped dispense beer to the Big Blue Club from the beer trucks before and during half time. Of course I helped myself to as much of that beer that I could drink during the first half.

Perhaps this approach could be used to help student attendance...

Yes, I am. As a sports fan, I was going to go to ODU games when I got here regardless. I planned going to much more after learning about the student fees. Once I got here, I went to an ODU football game and was hooked. The fees got me in, the team closed the deal. I think it would help with our more fiscally aware students. Is that a lot? Probably not. But if you convert a small group of students, it's worth it. Further, they deserve to be educated on the subject.

ODU doesn't make that information easy to attain, it's not clearly defined on our tuition statements. They should be more upfront and educate incoming freshman and transfers on the fee. If they are comfortable with charging the fee, they should be confident enough to disclose and educate the students on athletic fees. They should stand behind their decision. Otherwise, it looks like a fleecing and this is coming from someone who supports the athletic fees.

The average full time student pays enough in athletic fees per year to cover season tickets for all the ticketed sports (football, men and women's basketball, baseball, soccer and wrestling) and a $500 donation to ODAF. People need to remember that.

I think another contributing factor on top of the meal plan was it was a t shirt give away night. Sadly, I saw at least a handful of students come in, get a shirt, and march their tails out to go do whatever for the rest of the night. Their loss, in my opinion.

I agree about the fees. I attended florida and played in the band and still had to pay student fees for games. But the beer thing will never happen. Ncaa frowns upon liquor and sporting events and students. That's why some schools like utsa aren't building a stadium anytime soon. The alamadome can sell beer because its a private venue and funnel the money back to the school thru consession money. Over time you'll see utsa get more football playoff games so cusa can get the beer money.

Odu does it as a private party rental and odaf pays odu the fee and funnels the money back.

I think this is a great idea, but they have to figure out a way to improve the service. My daughter and wife, gave up after it appeared that they would miss the second half of the game because the line moved so slowly. They only honored the meal plan deal at one concession. Students get really tired of the food options and anything that provides something different is always welcome.

A good idea would be students get a $5 deal in the second half only. So a cheeseburger chips and drink starting at kickoff of the second half or even fourth quarter. The students would stay for the deal and stay to eat and then leave. It would stop the mass exiit at half time.

Great suggestion...... A 4th quarter $5 Student Meal Deal would be perfect. I am sure the venders would love as well. It is easier to sell what is left (cooked) and even sell the food they have at the stadium with them then pack un cooked food up and haul it away. Venders have already agreed to donate the un-purchased Items to the food banks and shelters in Norfolk.

I like It. A Student Special Only . This would give them something just for them and might keep them at the stadium longer.
