When's the last time an ACC game mattered to the National Championship?
This week's Clemson/FSU game certainly does, but before now ... ?
I have searched my memory banks and can't come up with anything, at least not in the past 25 years.
Is this the biggest ACC game of all time? I think it is.

The biggest games I remember are Boston college/Virginia Tech a few years ago, I can't remember VTs rank but there was a push that BC was a championship contender. also UNC/FSU IN THE LATE 90s. Both were big games and I had a great time at the UNC game even with the loss, while ultimately FSU would lose to Florida it was a defecto: What ACC team will compete for a national championship

There was also November 1997 when #5 North Carolina played #2 Florida State.

FSU has played some important ones through the years.

Are you talking a matchup of top ten teams? If so, these three come to mind.
October 2007 - #2 BC @ #8 VT (BC won)
November 2005 - #5 Miami @ #3 VT (Miami won)
Believe it was November 1997 - #2 FSU @ #5 UNC (FSU won)

That would be the last one. Both were in the title mix at that time.

The other two games had teams in the title mix at the time as well.

The AAC has NEVER had a game that mattered to the National Championship picture, since the AAC didn't exist before this year...
The Big East records prior to 2005 don't count, since not one AAC team was in the Big East at that time...

I was at that game. Just breaks my heart we've sucked since those days.

Not that it changes the fact that the records don't count, but Rutgers was definitely in the Big East back then. And we will be the last ones to leave after this year.

Also, November 4, 2000: #10 Clemson at #4 FSU. FSU would crush the Tigers en route to being humbled by Oklahoma in the national championship.

Bowden Bowl II lost its luster a bit because Clemson lost to Georgia Tech the previous week. Going into that game they were in the top 5 IIRC.

I would say Clemson was not in the title picture that year.

Actually Temple and UConn were both in the Big East before 2005. Just sayin' . . .

Melkey, UConn and Temple don't count. Temple was kicked out for incompetence, and UConn has only been playing FBS football for a decade... I wasn't counting Louisville and Rutgers, since they're about to bail. Perhaps I should have made that clear...
However, you still have a BCS autobid for one more year. Once the Card and Knights exit the ACC that BCS bid flies out the window with them...

RE: When's the last time an ACC game mattered to the National Championship?
In the run up to Clemson's 82 championship they were #2 and UNC was #8 back in 1981. In 1989, during GT's championship run, UVa was #1 and GT was about #6. Once in the 70's I believe NC State was undefeated and #10 and lost in an upset to UNC. Those are the only three I can recall from the time between Duke convincing the league to deemphasize football in 1962 to FSU joining in 1992.
